Obituary of Barry Joseph Walsh
The family of Barry Walsh, 72, are saddened to announce his passing on June 9, 2024. Barry passed away peacefully at home, with family by his side. Barry was the son of the late James and Marie (MacDonald) Walsh of Antigonish.
Barry was a proud lifelong resident of Cloverville Road. He worked for many years in the building supply industry. He later started a business as a property appraiser, a profession which enabled him to meet and get to know many people in Antigonish and the surrounding counties. It was a profession he loved.
Barry enjoyed spending time with family and friends – always eager to share a laugh and a good conversation over cards, turkey dinners, or musical gatherings. He was known for his kind and patient personality. He had appreciation and interest in the little things in life. He was well-read and had a deep knowledge of history, geography, politics, and religion and enjoyed a good discussion on any of these subjects. Our family is lucky to have a strong oral history due to Dad’s love of telling (and retelling!) stories.
He loved his dogs – the dearly departed “girls”, Goldie and Kobe, and his current companion Charlie. An obituary for Barry would not be complete without mentioning that he was a life-long, long-suffering fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Barry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Anne (Chisholm); children Donald, Antigonish; Elizabeth (Didier Beaudoin), Montreal; and Adam, Antigonish; siblings Donna (Denis) Grégoire, Comox; Bill (Christine) Walsh, Tuscon; Beatrice Walsh, Curtis (Marian) Walsh and Michael Walsh, all of Calgary. He is also survived by sister-in-law Geraldine (John Dan) Cameron; brothers-in law Ross (late Loretta) Fraser and Francis Chisholm (Claire Leger), as well as many special nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 14 from 5:00-8:00 pm in MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 15, at 11:00 am in St. Ninian Cathedral with representation by the Knights of Columbus, of which Barry was a member. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Antigonish Food Bank, St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Palliative Care, or the Victorian Order of Nurses. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Barry’s long-time physician, Dr. Pat McKenna, the Palliative Care team, particularly Dr. Maureen Allen and Trish MacKay, and the VON nurses for their kindness and exceptional care.
