It is with heavy and loving hearts we announce the passing of our Dad, Papa, Great-Papa – Augustus «Gus» Benjamin Boucher of Havre Boucher. Born January 21, 1930, to John and Mary (DeCoste) Boucher.
Gus enjoyed a wonderful life filled with lots of love and laughter. He was married to his wife, Anne, for 68 years before she passed in 2022. As a devoted Catholic he lived his life based on hard work, strong values, a kind heart, and a great sense of humor. Gus loved being surrounded by family and friends, especially over a good game of cards and a little “ding ding”.
You could always count on him to welcome you with a tight hug or hand squeeze, a “What are you doing here again” and a look of joy on his face. Gus was a great story teller, sharing the many adventures and laughs he had in life. If you were fortunate enough to share a family meal – you quickly learned about the “hot spoon”. It was amazing how often we thought we knew everything about him only to hear yet another amazing story.
Gus wore many hats in his work life. He was a fisherman at a young age. After his boat was destroyed in a storm, he headed to Ontario where he lived for many years growing both his family and his construction business. In 1975, he returned to his home community with his family and set up a home building business. As you drive through Havre Boucher and surrounding areas, you will see the success of Gus’s hard work in the many homes he built for people. His carpenter skills did not stop there. From cabinets, to furniture, grandfather clocks, and so on, his talents can be seen in many places.
Gus is survived by his nine children – Sharon (Donnie) Fougere, Judy (Mark) Fougere, Cathy (Bernie) Fougere, Diane (Brian) Melong, Karen (Reg) Fougere, John (Kelly), Lori (Blair) Fougere, Daniel (Patti) and Douglas. He also leaves his nineteen grandchildren – Jeff, Barry (Babylie), Jason, David (Christine), Adam (Ashley), Tracy (Marty), Elise (Steve), Laura (Denis), Matthew (Kate), Cortney (Michael), Dennis (Kimmy), Sarah (Louis), Mitchell (Heather), Paige, Daniel (Jessica), Kassie, Catrina (Evgeny), Jessica, Emily (Adrian) and seventeen great-grandchildren – Tyler, Dylan, Cali, Layla, Sophie, Emma, Fern, Rowan, Nolan, Jack, Simon, Cooper, Willow, Elliot, Claire, Isla and Benny. He also is survived by his sisters Theresa, Edith and Anne and special goddaughter Gloria.
Gus was predeceased by his loving wife Anne Mary (Beaton), infant daughter Susan, parents John & Mary Boucher, brothers: Bernard, Charlie, Victor, Harry, Joe, Billy, Fr Roy and sisters Marjorie and Bella as well as many extended family.
As a family, we would like to extend a very special thank you to Tammy Breen & Roberta Warner, who assisted our family with our Dad’s care. They treated Dad with love, dignity and respect and in the process became part of our family. To the Antigonish VON especially Chelsea, Jasmine & Brett, who Dad enjoyed teasing and chatting with. We also want to thank the Palliative Care team at St. Martha’s Hospital – especially Dr Maureen Allen, Pam Morrow and Valerie Pettipas as well as Jana VandenHeuvel at Continuing Care. It was a team effort keeping Dad in his home, with his family. He lived his life true to himself until his very last day.
We love you Dad & you will be missed.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 12 pm, in St. Paul’s Parish, Havre Boucher, NS with Reverend Allan MacPhie presiding. Burial in the Parish cemetery.
