Audrey MacKenzie Obituary
This fearcely independent, very gracious lady, has breathed her last, at the impressive age of 93.
Music was Mom’s passion. She began her musical journey while in elementary school in London, ON, excelling in violin and symphony for years. She studied voice and piano lessons in Hanover and achieved her Grade X Vocal Teacher’s certificate.
When we moved to Owen Sound, in 1969, she directed a community choir as part of the YMCA, then took on the music directorship at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, Owen Sound – a position she held for many years. We remember Mom’s many hours with the Kiwanis Music Festival – pouring over the board which scheduled the Music Festivals over the years. Audrey was known as “Mrs. M” to her many voice and theory students. Mom often ‘enjoyed’ hearing the many excuses for some not completing their homework on time!
When Mom and Dad moved to St. Francis’ Place many years ago, Dad kept busy dong his $10 income tax returns for those who needed them done properly, as well as being on the Board of Directors of Lutheran Social Services; Mom, continued teaching theory to a few students, to the age of 79, then offering to take on the position of ‘Welcome Neighbour’ to any new tenants moving into the building, through to 2020.
Mom is predeceased by her loving husband, Tom, in December 2014, her parents, her sister and niece.
Sharon (Graham), Jennie and Fred, will endeavor to carry on her strength of caring about the people who came across her path. Grandchildren Sonya, Adrienne, Kara (Brian) and Shea (Jen) will have a hole in their hearts for a very long time. Great Grandchildren Genevieve, Linnea, Danica and Isabelle have each known GG for a short time, but they all knew her well. Mom is also remembered by Graham’s children David, Simon (Nancy) and Stephen (Heather) and great-grandchildren Maeve, Declan, Lennon, Rae, Fletcher and Patrick.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Audrey’s life will be held at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 1049 4th Ave West, Owen Sound, at 2pm on Saturday, October 26th, 2024 with Pastor Rebecca Klages officiating. We cannot say enough about the exemplary care Mom received by the VON Supportive Housing team at St. Francis’ Place, Owen Sound. Many thanks to all, you know how much she cared for you! Much appreciation to Brightshores Hospital in Owen Sound, and Victoria Hospital in London, for their care in a difficult situation.
Peace be with you. The choirs in heaven will always be tuned beautifully!
