Armand John LeBlanc Obituary
It is with heartfelt sadness that the family announces the death of Armand John LeBlanc. John died suddenly on October 30, 2023, at the age of 71, at his home in Vancouver B.C., a city he loved.
Born in Antigonish N.S. on July 16, 1952, and raised in North Sydney, John was the son of the late Armand and Della (MacDougall) LeBlanc. He cared faithfully for his parents through their later years, returning to Cape Breton yearly to visit with them until their passing.
John is survived by his younger sister, Kathleen (Blaise) Young of Forestburg, AB where she raised John’s three nieces Laura, Rachelle and Thea. Rachelle (Mike) Nimmon, now of Edmonton, has two girls of her own, John’s grandnieces Ashlynn and Mckenna. “Uncle John” dearly loved all his nieces and grandnieces and would travel often to Alberta to be part of the milestone events in their lives. He was known for always giving the most beautiful cards.
On his father’s side, John is survived by his father’s sisters, Sister Therese LeBlanc of Antigonish, Marguerite MacNeil of Sydney, and Celeste Scanlan of Halifax. On his mother’s side he is survived by Frances MacDougall of Antigonish, Anne MacKenzie (Charlie) of Morristown NS, Jackie MacDougall of Sudbury ON, and Colin MacDougall (Colleen) of Bedford, NS. Aunt Anne and John were true kindred spirits from the time John was very young, creating a bond that held strong right up to the time of his passing. Also mourning his loss are his very good friends Judy and Janet of Calgary, and Sue of Vancouver.
John was educated at St. Francis Xavier University earning his BA in English and BEd. In 1977, John, Kathleen and Blaise headed “down the road” to Alberta where he completed a PhD in English in 1990 at the U of Calgary. In Calgary he discovered a passion for walking and running both for the exercise, the quiet time to think, and the enjoyment of nature. In 1993, John became a professor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO). He was a dedicated colleague, teacher, and mentor to many staff and students at the institution. John was one of the founders of UBCO’s Cultural Studies program. When he retired in 2011, he was awarded the title of associate professor emeritus of English and Cultural Studies.
Following his retirement John moved to Vancouver, his dream for many years, where he continued to learn and to share his knowledge on a wealth of subjects. He began a film discussion group for retired professors during the time of COVID. He contributed regularly to the Vancouver International Film Society, and continued to cultivate a love of music, especially jazz and Celtic, and a love of baseball that he had since he was a boy. While in Vancouver, John became a member of the Canadian Company of Pilgrams, Vancouver Chapter. He planned and led many Chapter Sunday city walks. Eventually he developed and led Wednesday walks on the southern Gulf Islands so that his fellow Pilgrims could prepare for their Camino walks in Europe. John was able to complete three Camino walks in Spain, Portugal and France. His last trek being 800 km in September, 2023. John made deep friendships with his fellow pilgrims and many sought out his counsel as they journeyed together. John found great joy within his Camino family. He was able to do his thing: thinking of others first, and taking care of what was needed to be done so others could enjoy.
John was a very private and quiet man, an extremely kind, thoughtful and generous man. From a young age John demonstrated his love for learning and his ability to listen to others’ stories. John was an inspiration to those who loved him or had the opportunity to know him. John, your seeds have been planted deeply within us. You will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. May you rest in peace.
A service for John will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney, with Deacon Dave Lewis officiating. A burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Online condolences can be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com
