Arlene Feke Obituary
It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Arlene Edyrl Feke on October 15, 2024, in Nanaimo, BC, while surrounded by loved ones. Born September 7, 1932, near Preeceville, SK, to Manda and Sven Strom, Arlene appreciated she had a more fortunate life on the farm than many others during the Great Depression. In 1944, her father passed away then she contracted TB falling quite ill, missing most of grade seven. Arlene moved with her mother to Calgary in 1947, where Arlene attended high school.
During this time, Arlene met Jack Turford, who was training in parachute maneuvers. They married, moving to New Westminster then Victoria to raise their four children. Upon divorcing after ten years, Arlene finished her schooling and graduated from General Business School and excelled as a secretary. In 1968, Arlene married Jim Feke and moved to Kamloops. During a return trip to Kamloops, Arlene had a serious life-altering accident that required lengthy hospital stay. That strain was too much for their marriage and they divorced.
After recovering from the accident, Arlene moved to Nanaimo in 1970 and began her new career as an Instructor of Secretarial Skills at Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University). Arlene’s career blossomed at Malaspina, soon she was department head with seven colleagues until retiring. During that time, Arlene made many lifelong friends and travelled to Europe, Great Britain, California, New York, and throughout BC.
In 1978, Arlene bought her beloved Lantzville waterfront property. Family and friends cherished the yard and beach with her to create countless happy memories.
Arlene met Don Bayne in 1986; she called him her «perfect partner» as both loved the outdoors and camping. They travelled to Mexico, throughout US, across Canada and even New Zealand – camping and exploring all the natural wonders they could find while visiting family and friends along the way.
Arlene also was involved with politics; she joined the NDP in 1972, becoming a tireless volunteer from 1988 to her 2017 retirement – her dedication was recognized with awarding of Honourary Life Member. Selling her beachfront property in 2007, Arlene and Don moved into North Nanaimo. They joined the OAP and formed many new friendships and a variety of activities kept them busy.
Arlene is predeceased by her parents, son John Turford, and brothers Lyman Strom, Everett Strom. She will be greatly missed by her devoted partner Don Bayne and her children Geri Macnab (Lorne), Shawn Turford (Geni), and Mark Turford.
Also to miss Arlene are her grandchildren Angie Macnab (Tony), Erica Macnab (Glen), Jana Macnab (Gordon), Brock Empey, Kaeli Turford (Matt) and Jesse Turford; great-grandchildren Nola Hiebert and Gray Murray; and her sister-in-law Pauline Strom, niece Wendy Strom, and nephews Randy Strom, Albert Strom and Dwight Strom.
A Celebration of Life will be held spring 2025. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Arlene’s memory are asked to consider donating to World Wildlife Federation of Canada or Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes Foodbank.
