It is with heavy hearts that the family announces Antonio’s passing, at home, on Monday, April 8th, at the age of 90 years. Left to mourn are his wife of 61 years, Teresa, daughter Lisa Newell (Bill), sister-in-law, Ottavia Cantera of Sulmona, Italy, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Armida and Alfredo Ciccone of Timmins, and brother-in-law, Ernesto Silveri, of Burnaby, British Columbia.
Also left to mourn are his nieces and nephews, Angela Ciccone – Kratofil (Arsen) of Timmins, Roberta Ciccone-Moscone (Anthony) of Sarnia, Ontario, Lou Silveri (Tamara) of Burnaby, B.C., Pino Silveri (Chrissy) of Burnaby B.C., Luigi and Lucia Marini of L’Aquila, Italy, Maria Olga (Salvatore) Cantera, Angela Cantera and Emilio Cantera of Sulmona, Italy. He will be missed by countless other relatives and friends both here in Canada as well as in Italy.
Tony has been reunited with his daughter Linda Cantera (2014), his parents, Emilio and Linda Cantera, brother, Bruno and sister and brother-in-law, Lina and Fiorino Ciccotelli.
Born in Ofena, in the province of L’Aquila, Italy, Tony emigrated to Canada in 1963 to begin a new life. Once in Canada, Tony embarked on a 40-year career as a tailor, working at such places as Sloma’s, Steinberg and Mahn, and Bukovetsky’s, in addition to all the tailoring he did at home after work. His early days in Timmins also included shifts as a bartender at the Empire Hotel, where he developed a life-long love of the Montreal Canadiens. All these extra after hours of work were done so that he could put his family first and provide them with what was needed to become successful. During his early years in Timmins, Tony was a member of the Porcupine Dante Club, volunteering many hours of his time, enjoying a glass of draft, and playing a game or two of bocce. As a person who loved sports, especially soccer, Tony always looked forward to watching matches on television. This Sunday ritual was only rivalled by his love of a warm sunny day and a walk to enjoy the outdoors. It could never be too hot or too sunny.
The family would like to thank the countless people in the medical community who supported Tony these last few months, both here in Timmins as well as in Sudbury. Most notably, the family would like to thank Dr. Ciccone, nurse Liz Feldman, nurse practitioner Anne Punkkinen, and Anna Maria Di Profio for their professionalism, expertise, but most importantly their compassion.
The family will receive family and friends at the LESSARD Funeral and Cremation Centre on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Church, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 1 p.m. Entombment to follow at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sacred Heart Church Building Fund or to Sports for Kids Timmins, or a charity of one’s choice.
