Ann Gross (Née Cohen)
October 19, 1938 – March 8, 2024
Peacefully, at home in Toronto, on Friday, March 8, 2024, in her eighty-fifth year. Beloved and devoted wife of the late Gerald (Jerry) Gross for sixty-five years. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Barry Gross, Harold Gross and Sharon Erlichman. Treasured grandmother of Sylvia. Daughter of the late Max and the late Fay Cohen. Sister-in-law of Sherna and the late Nathan Gross, Naomi and the late Bernard Gross. Ann will be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
While raising her two sons, Barry and Harold, Ann completed her bachelor’s degree and went on to obtain a Masters of Library Science degree. Her professional work as a librarian included many years as the head librarian at Centennial Academy, and also with the City of Westmount, working in Cataloguing and Information Technology.
Ann’s interest in Library Science stemmed from having assembled, catalogued and managed the collection of literature and information for the Québec Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. This collection was catalogued by Ann using a system that she developed on her own; later, this collection was absorbed into McGill University’s library collection, with her unique classification markings still in place.
Upon retiring, Ann moved to Toronto, however she maintained close ties to Montreal through her many friends, and family and her beloved Lake Birch. Ann continued pursuing her love of classical music, having studied piano up to university level, and was a devoted patron of the arts in Toronto, including the ballet, the symphony, the art gallery and museums.
The family wishes to thank her team of Personal Support Workers (Lea, Gerry, Jess, Kareen and Fermina) who helped make her final months as comfortable as possible as she recovered from lengthy hospital stays and coped with chronic pain. Also, a huge Thank You to the team at the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care including Dr. Melnitzer and Community Nurse Emily; your support was invaluable.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Wednesday March 13 at 12:00 noon. Burial at Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, 1250 ch. de la Forêt. Donations in her memory may be made to the “Ann and Gerald Gross Scholarship Fund” c/o ORT Montreal at (514) 244-8801, bit.ly/AnnGross or to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto via this link tlcpc.org/temmy-latner/donors.
