Andrew McConnell
April 7, 1935 – November 7, 2023
It is with profound sadness that the family of Andrew McConnell announce his passing on November 7, 2023. Andrew will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Lisa, his son-in-law David Patterson and his adored and treasured grandsons Luke Patterson and Blake Patterson, who were the light of his life. Andrew will be missed by his brother Terry Fitzgerald, his sisters-in-law Susan Fitzgerald, Eva Joy Bay, Helen Zurell, JoAnn Walker, Lois Zurell, Sharon Nahrgang and brother-in-law Bud Walker along with many nieces, nephews, their families and countless friends. Special mention goes to nieces Patti, Jacqueline, Shannon, Tricia and Sheilah. Andrew is predeceased by his wife Marlene, sister Shirley, brothers Jack, Ken and Bill and brothers-in-law Wayne Bay, Bruce Zurell, Wayne (“Fred”) Zurell and Bill Nahrgang.
Andrew was born on April 7, 1935 in West Luther Township. While growing up in Arthur, Andrew obtained certifications in signalling and advanced Morse code from the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, played hockey for several teams over the years including the Arthur Lions and the Arthur Tigers and he worked part time for Maurice Douglass in his pharmacy. Andrew often told stories of swimming in a local creek with his friends, especially Don Pryde, and going early on Sunday mornings to a local church to fire up the stove before the service began.
After high school, Andrew went on to graduate from his beloved Queen’s University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering. Andrew began his engineering career on May 5, 1958 with the Department of Highways, later the Ministry of Transportation, where he stayed until his retirement on December 31, 1992. He met Marlene and they started their married life together in 1959 and were married for almost 61 years at her passing on August 6, 2020. It is perhaps meaningful that Andrew passed away on what would have been their 64th wedding anniversary.
With retirement came the opportunity for Andrew and Marlene to travel to many places including most of Canada, many parts of the US, including Hawaii and Alaska, the Caribbean, countless countries in Europe, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Andrew often talked fondly about travelling with dear friends Adrienne and Bruce Arnold, Rug and Mac Jenkins, Bev and Gerry Clarke, and Alex and Maxine Kelly.
Andrew travelled with Marlene many times to Ireland and spent time there researching the McConnell family history which led him to write a McConnell Family Tree in 2005. He even located a stone barn still standing on what would have been property owned by the McConnell family in Ireland from generations ago. Andrew visited the property with Marlene several times and they became friends with its current owners.
By far and away Andrew’s greatest joys were his two grandsons Luke and Blake. He loved them both with all his heart and was enormously proud of both of them. They will miss their Papa very much. Andrew’s beloved Crosby will miss him too.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Christa Clark, Rob Lawton, Kerrie Zeka, Dr. Jonathan Horne and Cheryl, and all of the wonderful nurses and PSWs who looked after Andrew in his final phase of life. You are all caring and kind souls and Andrew’s family is enormously grateful to all of you.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Information regarding that will be posted on the website of the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home in Milverton once the date has been set. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations, in Andrew’s honour, to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
