GERBER, Amos
Amos Gerber, 90, formerly of Shakespeare, passed away peacefully at his home in Stratford on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Amos was born in Ellice Township, Perth County on September 24, 1932, a son of the late Joseph and Annie (Roes) Gerber. He married Mary Ellen (Schwartzentruber) Gerber at Poole Mennonite Church on September 28, 1957. She predeceased him on April 14, 2018.
Dear father of three children, Jim and wife Lety Gerber of Monterrey, Mexico; Kathy and husband Chris Murray of Ottawa, Patty and husband Rob Fleming of Shakespeare; lovingly remembered by five grandchildren, Jared Fleming, Mitchell Fleming, Erin Murray, Alexandra Murray and Ben Murray. He is survived by brother William Gerber (Marion Faull) and brother-in-law Harold Schwartzentruber.
He was predeceased by sisters, Florence Kropf (David), Mary Stief (Elton), Mattie Bast (Sanford), and by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Irvine and Marion Schwartzentruber, Laura and Michael Gerber, and Freda Schwartzentruber.
A machinist by trade, Amos worked for 30 years at Dominion Chain until his retirement in 1997. He was the Reeve of South Easthope Township from 1980 – 1987, and Warden of Perth County in 1988. An avid sports enthusiast, he spent many years coaching and umpiring fastball in Shakespeare; served as President of the Shakespeare & Community Athletic Association (SCAA) from 1971 – 1972 and was a member of the Optimist Club of Shakespeare. He was the ultimate Toronto Blue Jays fan and an active member of Avon Mennonite Church in Stratford.
Relatives and friends will be received in the Francis Funeral Home, 77 Woodstock St.N., Tavistock on Tuesday, May 16th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Poole Mennonite Church, 6475 Perth Road 121, Poole, ON, Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Troy Watson will officiate. Reception following. Interment will be in Poole Mennonite Cemetery.
