Alvin Deinstadt Obituary
Alvin Edwin Deinstadt
January 22, 1930 – January 22, 2024
Alvin passed away on January 22, 2024, in Nanaimo, BC. Alvin is predeceased by his wife, Helen (nee Traill) in 1996, his son Brent (Christine Griswold) in 2014, and his siblings. Alvin is survived by daughter Betty (George Benson), sons Bruce (Patricia Schwab) and Wesley Traill (Eileen Eytcheson), partner Dolly Reimer, and his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Alvin was born in Meskanaw, Saskatchewan on the Traill Farm on January 22, 1930, to Nanetta Goulden and Albert Deinstadt. Nanetta and Albert had eight children: Fred, Harry, George, Melvin, Joy, Dave, Stella, and Alvin.
Alvin left school after grade seven to find a job to support himself, working for the CN Railway in Prince Albert. He then came to British Columbia and worked as a deck hand on the Canadian Pacific Steam Ships, travelling the coast. He loved this work and met his best friend Fred Brown at this time in his life. The two of them got up to many hijinks and had so much fun! While travelling home to Prince Albert, he met Helen M Traill (daughter of Hugh and Pauline [Thierstein] Traill), fell in love, and married her on December 1, 1951. Helen had a son, Wesley Douglas Traill (Eileen Eytcheson) whom she brought into the union, and then together the couple added Betty (George Benson), Bruce (Patricia Schwab), and Brent (Christine Griswold). While living in Prince Albert, Alvin worked for the CN Railroad; later, Alvin moved to the coast where he worked for BC Ferries out of Horseshoe Bay. Alvin then started his own cleaning business while also working for the Richmond school board.
Eventually, the family moved to Vancouver Island, where Alvin worked for the Nanaimo School Board. After this, he worked at Harmac, where he was a Power Engineer. Alvin then moved on to employment with public works in Victoria; he spent the remainder of his career as a Power Engineer working for the Canadian National Defense in Nanaimo and Nanoose.
Alvin loved giving his time to others in need and did this for many years through the Masonic Family. He and Wesley were members of Nanaimo Lodge 110, Brent was active in DeMolay, and Helen and Betty were Daughters of the Nile. In addition to this, Alvin was master of Chemainus Lodge, where he was lovingly supported when Helen passed away. Alvin proudly received his 50-year jewel in 2022. Later in life, he was active in the Victoria clubs. Alvin organized and drove the Cancer Car and was a Shriner in Nanaimo. As a Shriner, he enjoyed maintaining the old fire truck for parades; we have a wonderful memory of all of his grandchildren washing the fire truck on his front lawn.
Alvin also loved the outdoors and taught his children to hunt, fish and camp. In retirement, Al and Helen bought an RV and travelled to the United States and all over Vancouver Island. The couple joined the Twilight Campers and enjoyed many associations there. After Helen’s passing, Alvin met and fell in love with Dorothy (Dolly) Reimer, and they moved to her home in Victoria where they enjoyed life to the fullest. The couple spent many years together, taking trips including travelling to Mexico and enjoying an Alaskan Cruise.
In his final years, he lived with his son, Bruce, and his daughter, Betty. Alvin passed away on his 94th birthday, in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
The family would like to thank the mid-island community nurses who supported us in our homes. Many thanks also to the doctors, nurses, and staff of NRGH.
A celebration of life is planned to take place in the summer of 2024.
