Alpin ‘Al’ Barteaux
1926-2024
Alpin «Al» Leon Barteaux, 97, passed away
peacefully on October 14, 2024 at Ivey’s Terrace Nursing
Home with loving family by his side. While Dad was being called Home,
we played and sang his favourite music to help make his journey
easier.
Dad was born in Advocate Harbour, NS, and was the son of the
late Vance and Sinar Barteaux. After high school,
Dad joined the Canadian Technical Training Corps Army in 1944 where he
trained as a Field Surveyor at Williams Lunn College in
Montreal. He was then transferred to the Royal
Canadian Artillery 6th Division and was mobilized for the Pacific
Theatre when the war ended. After he was discharged in Halifax October
1945, Dad enrolled in the Veterans’ School in Windsor and
Halifax in Management Accounting.
He started out in Pictou County as Manager of Singer Sewing
Machine in New Glasgow. One day, a beautiful young
lady came in to have lunch with one of the employees and later Dad
asked, «Who was that girl?» She replied, «Margaret
Chisholm», and Dad said, «I’m going to marry her
someday», and he did. They raised 7 children where each and every
one of us gave them a run for their money. They raised a close and
happy family. Dad was an avid curler, golfer and
reader. His favourite time of year was Christmas and Mom had to make
him wait until December 1st before putting up any Christmas
decorations. He loved his family get-togethers with good food, music
and laughter. We thought of Dad as our «Hey
Google». He always knew the answers to our
questions.
Dad spent most of his working life in the construction
industry starting off with Tidewater Construction and over 19 years,
he went from Field Accountant to Cape Breton Concrete as
Superintendent of Paving Operations. He then went to Warren Maritimes
as District Manager and finished his career as Manager of Grove
Construction, Saint John, NB, a part of the Warren Group. Dad retired
in 1987 and then he and Mom spent their winters in Florida until
Mom’s health declined.
Dad was a past member of Branch 29 Royal Canadian Legion,
past President and member of Stellarton Curling Club, past member of
Westville Seniors’ Curling Club, Member of Abercrombie Golf
Club and chaired the Trenton Cancer Drive and Kidney Foundation for
several years. He was honoured on November 11, 2023 at the Remembrance
Day celebrations in Trenton as one of the oldest surviving
veterans.
Surviving are his children: Valerie (Ron) Weatherbie, Pictou;
Allan (Ann) Barteaux, Hampton, NB; Frank Barteaux, Trenton; Cathy
(Pat) Barteaux-Pye, Stellarton; Joanie (Peter) Thompson, New Glasgow;
Angela Barteaux, New Glasgow; Darren (Julie) Barteaux, Ardoise, NS;
his brother, Millard Barteaux, Gimli, MB; grandchildren: Jermaine, New
Glasgow; Stephen, Hampton, NB; Tim (Karen), BC; great-grandchildren:
Sabrina, Gander, NF; Tyson and Vance, New Glasgow.
Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by his wife,
Margaret; infant son, Phillip; brothers: Doug, Fred, Watson (Benny),
Walter (Cap); sister, Florence; grandson, Michael Mason,
Lourdes.
We would like to thank the staff at both High Crest Place,
New Glasgow and Ivey’s Terrace Nursing Home, Trenton and Dr.
Elliott for the excellent care they gave Dad. Also, thanks to Lena at
Active Life for your great massages for the past 20 years and to his
great golfing buddies Ray Turner, Alvin Sinclair and Bud
MacPherson.
Dad’s wishes were that there be no visitation but a
Celebration of Life to be held at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont
Ave., New Glasgow on Monday, October 21st at 1pm with Fr. Godwin Kalu
presiding. Reception to follow. Committal will be in Advocate Harbour,
NS at a later date.
Donations may be made to the IWK, Kidney Foundation,
SPCA,
CARMA
or any charity of your choice.
