Leaving to mourn her loving children: Tom (Ozette), Brian (Helen), Gerard (Jennifer), Carl (Brenda), Linda (Charlie), Patricia (Carl), Sandra (Sheila), Patrick, Edward (Vanessa), and Ron (Tammy); step-children: Donald (Marina), Gary (Berdina), and Helen; sisters: Mary O’Brien, Margaret Otis, Gertrude McFatridge, and Bride Lynch; brothers: Brendan (Shirley), Edward (Sharon), and Francis (Marie); many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Alice was born in Riverhead, Harbour Grace on November 29th, 1932. Mom was the oldest child of Edward and Bridget Sullivan who had 10 children (Alice, Mary, Geraldine, Brendan, Margaret, Joseph, Gertrude, Edward, Francis, and Bride). Alice moved away from home at the age of 18 to work in St. John’s at the old General Hospital. While working at the hospital she met a young man, Patrick Reddick, from the Southern shore (Bauline East) who was working as an orderly in the Waterford hospital. Alice and Pat married on January 4, 1955 and moved to Schefferville, Quebec where dad worked as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for the Iron Ore Company of Canada. They started their family there and would have half the family clan born there (Tom born in ‘56, Brian in ‘57, Gerard in ‘58, Carl in ‘59 and Linda in ‘60). In 1960, the family moved back to Newfoundland and Pat took a job in Renews as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic working for the Department of Highways. As the Reddick family expanded, Patricia in ‘61, Sandra in ‘62 and Patrick in ‘63, dad took a job in Labrador City and the family moved there in September 1963. To keep the sequence going Edward was born in ‘64. Nine children in 9 years, life was very busy for Alice and Pat. Finally, Ronald came along in 1969 to complete the family of 10.
Every summer Alice and Pat and family would return home to the island to spend time in Bauline and Hr. Grace. My parents spent 25 years in Labrador City making many great friends and lasting memories. In 1988, due to illness with Parkinson’s Disease, Pat retired from IOCC and the family moved to Harbour Grace. Alice loved moving back to Hr. Grace to be near her family and friends. In 2002 Alice and Pat moved to Parkdale Manor, Mount Pearl. Dad passed away shortly thereafter due to complications of Parkison’s disease.
It was a little-known fact that sometime in Alice’s early years she had dated a young Bill Short who also lived in Riverhead, Hr. Grace. Bill’s wife had passed away from cancer. Bill began to pursue Alice and after a short courtship they decided to get married. Alice and Bill got married in September, 2002. Bill’s family became Alice’s family with Donald (Marina), Gary (Berdina) and Helen joining. Bill had worked with the FFAW, in the early years, and often told interesting stories of the many places he visited and the people he met. Bill continued to be an active fish harvester into his 70’s. As newlyweds, Alice and Bill loved to socialize and often attended the senior dances at the Legion. Alice and Bill thoroughly enjoyed their time together and it was nice to see that, as seniors, you still can have an active and busy lifestyle well into their 80’s. Bill passed away in September, 2021 at the age of 91.
Alice continued to reside at Parkdale Manor with support from her children. This past summer mom celebrated her 90th birthday. We held a large celebration in her honour and were so happy that her brothers and sisters, daughters and sons, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren and relatives and family friends were able to attend.
Mom will be greatly missed, she lived a long, enjoyable and healthy life. We will be comforted in all the fond memories that come from being a part of a large family. We love you mom, forever in our hearts.
Visitation at Noel’s Funeral Home, Harvey Street, Harbour Grace on Wednesday, April 5 from 10:30 am – 12:00 noon.
Funeral Mass will take place at 1:00 p.m. from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Riverhead, Harbour Grace.
Interment in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Harbour Grace.
As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund, P.O Box 299, Harbour Grace, NL, A0A 2M0.
