It is with broken hearts, yet filled with peace, that we announce that Alice Hathaway has gone home to be reunited with her husband and soul mate, Jack (1998).
At 101 ¾ years, she fought the good fight. She will be sorely missed by her daughter Jackie Watt (formerly Scott) and her son, Mike and Bobbye Hathaway. Alice adored her three grandsons: Todd and Allison Scott, Tim and Joseline Hathaway, Troy and Michelle Hathaway (Jenilea). She loved each of her great-grandchildren: Tristan, Caeden, Nick, Sammy, Haley, Kyla, Dawson, Sophie. She is predeceased by her 5 siblings and their spouses: John and Irene Johnson, Arthur and Mary Johnson, Lena and Art Simmons, Lefa and Frank Christensen, Doris and Norm Stewart.
Alice’s strength and independence led her to meet Cpl. Jack Hathaway R.A.F., who was stationed at Mt. Hope during the war. They married in Hamilton on Sept. 16, 1944. By Oct. 1944, Alice was travelling on an ammunition ship from Halifax to England to live with her new in-laws in S. Wales. Jackie was born in 1946 in S. Wales, and soon, they boarded the Queen Elizabeth to return to Canada and settle in Hamilton where Mike was born in 1954.
Alice and Jack enjoyed many trips together, including Hawaii and wintering in Florida. Even at 100 years young, she enjoyed baking her delicious butter tarts, lemon filled cupcakes, and making fancy pink sandwiches. She had the best laugh and loved to laugh at her own jokes.
Alice and her family are eternally grateful for the superb care she received at St. Peter’s Hospital. Your support and friendship throughout this journey were invaluable. Special thanks to Dr. Taniguchi and all the staff on 3 West for their patience, kindness and compassion. ‘Thanks’ is simply not enough.
…And just at the moment when someone says, «She’s gone», there are other eyes watching for her and with glad voices, ready to shout out, «Here she comes!»
We love you, Mom!
A celebration of Alice’s life will be held on Thursday January 12, 2023 at St. John United Church (195 E. 38th St.) with visitation from 11:00am-12:00pm immediately followed by a service and reception.
For those who wish, memorial donations made to St. Peter’s Hospital or St. John United Church would be appreciated.
