On December 3rd, , 2023, Alfred Vogel, at the age of 93, after a long and beautiful life, is now at home again with our mom. He was the beloved husband of Anne Marie (1937-2020) for 62 years! Loving father of Tony (Cyndy) Vogel, Anne (Bob) Donkers, Paul (Linda) Vogel, Ursula (Dan) Flipsen and Angela (late Doug) Fawcett. A proud grandpa to Jen (Mike), Dave (Ashley), Jamie (Hannah), Virginia (Chris), Shannon (Joey), Andy (Alyssa), Jakob (Stepanie), Crystal (Frank), Amber (Grant), Michaela (Darren), Angela (Tristan), Kristopher, Paige, Abby and Leah and 19 great- grandchildren with more to come. Alfred was predeceased by his parents, brothers and sisters. Alfred will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
Our Dad was born in Goldach, Switzerland on June 11, 1930 to the late Rudolph and Bertha Vogel. He was the second youngest of 12 children. After finishing his schooling and working in the French part of Switzerland, Dad moved to Canada in 1953 with the intention of learning English and then going back home. He spent the next few years working across the country on dairy farms, bush camps and gold mines. Then settling in Southern Ontario as he found work on a tobacco farm. He met our Mom in 1956, they were married on July 5th, 1958 and as they say, the rest is history. Dad worked for Shavers poultry in Branchton, Ontario after which they were able to purchase their first farm in Paris, Ontario where they milked Brown Swiss Cows. In 1971, they moved their 4 children and Brown Swiss Cows to Williamstown, Ontario. Their family grew, A LOT, (see above) as did their love for Glengarry County. Dad would never hesitate to say that “the wise men always came from the East”.
They continued to milk their Brown Swiss but eventually realized that Holstein cows were the way to go. The heard expanded to 70 cows and always included a Jersey Cow, which kept our mom happy. While the cows and farm land were enough to raise a family, Dad always loved to learn and try new things. Over the years our farm would come to house numerous horses, sheep, beef, fallow deer, red deer, goats, pigs, rabbits, peacocks, and lots and lots of chickens. Oh, and a pet turkey, because what farm doesn’t have one of those?
Considering he grew up in a small village and studied business at school, he was very passionate about agriculture. He represented Glengarry Country as a member of soil and crop, Glengarry County Dairy farmers and Glengarry Federation of Agriculture. He loved to travel, meeting life long friends along the way. His door was always open and he was never happier then when he was sharing a schnapps or a sausage with family or friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Williamstown, on Tuesday, Dec 12, 2023 at 11 am. Rite of Committal will follow in the parish cemetery. A Celebration of his life to follow in the St Mary’s Centre. If any one can not attend the Mass, please feel free to join the family at the Centre. In lieu of flowers, we request a donation made in Alfred’s name to the Char-Lan District High School, SHSM Agricultural program, 19743 John Street, Williamstown, Ontario, K0C 2J0.
