Obituary for
Alex Allen
Passed peacefully away at Connaigre Peninsula Health Centre surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, July 18th, 2023, Alex Allen, age 27 years of Harbour Breton.
Alex was born to parents Bob and Denise on a Tuesday evening, April 30th, 1996. Alex’s family was beyond ecstatic with his arrival. Alex was such a happy, beautiful, rambunctious child who kept everyone on their toes. Alex’s family quickly learned that he was a very bright child who loved books and brought many smiles to his family and friends with his incredible imagination and gift for writing and drawing. He loved being involved and having fun, taking piano, and singing lessons, going to Sparks/Brownies, Sunday School, and so on. As a child, Alex loved celebrating his birthday. He loved planning them with the various themes he wanted; they brought him so much joy. Alex was so happy when his little sister, Gracie, was born and spoke often of having a happy, carefree childhood. Alex said at his kindergarten graduation, “When I grow up, I want to be a doctor,” and that he could have been.
Unfortunately, Alex would have to endure many challenges during his school years. However, with incredible strength and courage, he was determined to graduate high school, and he did. After high school, Alex gained some employment and was very happy with his job at the Community Youth Network where he worked just last year. This position gave him purpose, which was so important to him. Alex was an advocate for people with mental health issues and often spoke about Autism acceptance and gender equality.
Alex will be remembered for his care and compassion for other people, even when he was hurting himself. He will be remembered for his love of children and his love of animals, especially his childhood puppy, Sandi. Alex believed that it was our responsibility to speak for animals because they have no voice. Alex was a teacher; he taught us compassion, acceptance and understanding for people suffering from mental illness and those who were seen as “different.” He demonstrated tremendous resilience and tried his best to push through the hardest days. Alex also wanted to see a change in the way people with mental illness are treated and cared for in this province. He will also be remembered for his wit and ability to make anyone laugh. Alex’s most profound message to his mom, dad, and sister Gracie, was to “live your best life,” a motto we should all live by.
Alex always longed to have friends, and he and his family were very thankful for the friends he had; they will be his family’s friends forever. Alex’s family would like to emphasize the importance of being understanding and compassionate with those who are struggling, showing acceptance in the face of challenges, and holding your loved ones close. Alex was blessed with a loving, accepting family who faced his challenges with him, which meant the world to him. Alex had a special bond with his Nan Allen, who would do anything for him, and his Aunt Sharmane, who advocated for him right to the very end.
Alex loved the simple things in life. He always enjoyed a good cup of coffee, and in the last few months, it was his passion. No matter how sick he was, Alex went through the process with his “aero press” to make the perfect cup, which gave him comfort right to the end. The family’s hope for their beloved Alex is that he is finally at peace, serving up his best cup of coffee.
Alex leaves to mourn his parents, Bob and Denise Allen; sister, Grace; grandparents, Wallace and Sandra Bennett, and Everett and Florence Allen, all at Harbour Breton, NL; and a large circle of family and friends.
Alex is predeceased by his great-grandparents and other beloved family members.
As per Alex’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral or visitation will be held. Alex requested his family and friends have a “gathering of memories,” which will be held at a later date.
