Alasdair passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023, with his family by his side. Cremation has already taken place, to be followed by a private family ceremony.
Alasdair is survived by his wife, Margie Henderson, his children, Mair Cayley (Megan) and David Cayley (Sachiko), and his three grandchildren. Alasdair is predeceased by his sister, Briony, and her wife Gail Hartshorn. He was always welcomed as family by the Hartshorn clan, for which he was grateful.
Alasdair was born in Toronto on June 2, 1952 to parents Frank and Doreen. He fondly remembered his time at Lakefield College School in Ontario, and the peers and teachers with whom he formed strong bonds during his time there. Golf was always a central feature of Alasdair’s life, from his youth up until his latter years. He played from coast to coast in Canada, and also played the width and breadth of Scotland, among other places. Alasdair was a long-time member of Toronto Golf Club and also the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew’s. Alasdair’s love for golf was second only to his love for his wife, Margie. After meeting in 2004, they were inseparable. On June 16, 2006, they exchanged vows in the ancient cathedral ruins of St. Andrews, Scotland. Not only did they share a love of golf, but also a love of mirth, wine, and good company. Their close friends included Rosemary and Graham Haley, Margie’s business partners, and Joyce and Steve Crawford, who they met at their winter home in Fort Myers, Florida. Even in their later years, the love between Alasdair and Margie was pure and unextinguishable. Alasdair spent his final days surrounded by family in British Columbia.
His family is grateful for the unparalleled care he received from the staff at Juravinski Cancer Centre and at Vancouver General Hospital, and for all the help and support he received from care workers and friends.
