Obituary
Alan Francis Caule, K.C., age 92, passed peacefully away at The Residence at Littledale on August 31, 2024 after a sudden illness. He was the son of the late Patrick Joseph and Ellen Josephine (Gosse) Caule. He was predeceased by his siblings: Dr. Elmer Caule (Claire Landry – deceased), Sr. Helen Caule RSM, Mary Holliday (Robert – deceased), Bernice Caule, and Raymond Caule (Jean Stenhouse). He leaves to mourn a circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Alan attended St. Bonaventure’s College and continued his studies at Memorial University. While at Memorial, Alan joined the United Nations Training Division as a reserve officer cadet and spent one summer on a cruise with the Navy to Europe, visiting England, Belgium and France.
After graduating from Dalhousie Law School in 1957, Alan took a position at the Halifax firm of Coffin, Blois and Hicks. He was admitted to the Bar of Nova Scotia in February 1958. Alan returned to Newfoundland and took a position with Browne, Renouf and Mercer. He was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland in October 1958.
Alan practiced law in St. John’s from 1958 until his retirement in 1992. In 1959, he joined the firm of McGrath, Furlong and Ryan. In 1963, the firm of Ryan, Caule and Gushue merged with Emerson, Stirling, Goodridge and Goodridge. Alan practiced with Stirling, Ryan, Goodridge, Caule, Gushue and Goodridge, specializing in insurance and marine law. He left the firm after ten years for his own practice, Caule and Matthews, from which he retired.
He had a longstanding interest in legal aid. In 1965, Alan was appointed to the Law Society committee tasked with assessing the implementation of a legal aid program in Newfoundland. He served on the committee until 1976 when the government set up the Legal Aid Commission. Alan was then appointed to the Commission, initially as a member, and in 1986 as Chairperson, serving in that role until he retired.
Alan’s retirement plans included studying history and wintering in Florida. He loved salmon fishing with friends on the Gander River and golfing in St. John’s as a member of Bally Haly Golf and Country Club, and in St. Petersburg, Florida with his friends from Pinewood Village. He was an avid reader with an exceptional memory. He was passionate about the history of World Wars I and II and all things related to his beloved Newfoundland and, especially, St. John’s. Nothing gave Alan greater pleasure than going to The Rooms and knowing more than what was written about an exhibit.
Alan shared his love of classical and crooner music, knowledge of British and Newfoundland military history, ownership of his 1960 Mark 2 Jaguar, and his rapier wit with family and friends.
Many thanks to the staff at The Residence at Littledale for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alan’s memory may be made to the Misericordia Mission Fund. Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 11 am from the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Military Road.
