In loving memory of Aira Alahaivala (nee Haapakoski), 91 years who passed away peacefully the evening of Saturday June 1, 2024 at Manty Finlandia, Sudbury
Aira, born 1933 was raised in Ylivieska, Finland where she met and married Sauli Alahaivala (predeceased 1967). They welcomed the birth of their daughter Riitta in 1956 (predeceased 1959). Sauli, Aira and Riitta immigrated to Canada in 1957 living in Sudbury, Courtney BC, Elliott Lake and ultimately settling in Sudbury.
Aira is survived by her son Raimo (wife Heather) and daughter Raija (husband Graham). She was a cherished Mummu to Ryan (wife Cala), Katelyn (husband Brett) and Aaron (wife Alannah). She would have loved to have met her great grand children Miles, Jackson, Madison and Grayson but the Lord had other plans in mind for her.
Aira, a woman of great faith, was a long time member of St Mathew’s Finnish Lutheran Church (now New Hope Lutheran Church) and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
Aira worked at Scandinavian Foods for over 20 years. She loved to keep a very tidy home where she cooked her famous Finnish casseroles, baked her delicious Pulla, Joulutorttus, Piparkakkus and Karjlan Piirakkas for her family and friends. Cross country skiing on Ramsey Lake, blue berry picking, gardening and knitting were her favourite past times, and walking became a passion after she retired.
The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Felicia Presenza, her staff, and to the staff of both Finlandia Lepo Koti and Finlandia Manty for their excellent care and compassion.
At Aira’s request, there will be no public visitation or funeral service. Cremation with a family committal service will be at the family plot at Sudbury Park Lawn Cemetery. If you wish to make a donation in lieu of flowers, Aira requested that they be made to New Hope Lutheran Church at nhlc.ca or to Finlandia SISU Foundation at finlandiavillage.ca.
