It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Edgar Arthur Gerhardt on the 4th of March.
Edgar was born in Riverport, NS on the 16th of August 1935, the youngest son of the late Leo Arthur and Gladys Eveline (Mosher) Gerhardt.
Edgar was raised in a loving family, always close with older siblings Leon and Lucy.
Edgar attended elementary school at the Bayport (One Room) Schoolhouse, followed by the Lunenburg Academy. He graduated from Dalhousie University after studying accounting and economics. He began his accounting career at ABCO Group, where he thrived for 44 years, finishing his tenure as the company vice president. Edgar’s entrepreneurial drive also played a role in Reinforced Plastic Systems (Mahone Bay) and West Nova Fuels (Lunenburg).
He is survived by his wise wife of 61 years Sharon (Clarke), daughters, Paula (Peter) and Gretchen (Steve), sons, Graham (Sally) and William (Rachel). Grandchildren, Samantha (Thomas), Alexander (Ceilagh), Andrew and Stephen Baker, Paul, Leo, Martin, Thomas, Lucy and James Gerhardt, and Mae Parsons. Great grandson, Rowan Baker and son-like nephews, Daniel and Peter Stead.
Edgar was a pillar of the South Shore community throughout his life, giving back through involvement in many organizations. Some of his many involvements include the Riverport Board of Trade, Riverport and District Fire Department, Riverport Community Center, Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he achieved a Junior National JC Senatorship, the Lunenburg Board of Trade, Lunenburg Swimming Pool, where he was made an Honorary President, the Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition, and as the first Board Chairperson of the Lunenburg Vocational School (NSCC). Edgar has been a member of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Board, Secretary-treasurer of the Bayport Cemetery, Lunenburg Curling Club, and Board of VON Trust. Edgar was devoted to his faith and church community, serving as the Trinity United Church Clerk of Session for 52 years. His love of life-long learning inspired him to remain involved in local schools, striving to instill this passion in the students of the South Shore communities.
After retiring from ABCO, Edgar, always one to stay busy, began his second career. Driving his dump truck for the family business on a daily basis was the greatest joy of Edgar’s illustrious career. This gave him an opportunity to even further engage with his community, catching up with old friends and making many new ones.
Edgar was known to either plow through winter (sometimes literally!) or avoid it with visits with his wife Sharon to their home in Palm Bay, Florida.
He had many interests such as gardening, boating, and choir. He was dedicated to spending time with his family, particularly to stirring up fun with his grandchildren. Nothing was as close to his heart as his family, his vocation and his faith.
When asked “How did you live so long?” Edgar, with a legendary sense of humor, replied with a grin “Only the good die young”.
A service to celebrate Edgar’s life will be held on 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2023 at Trinity United Church, Rose Bay, Rev. Vivian Moores, officiating.
Donations can be made to Trinity United Church, Rose Bay, Bayport Cemetery, or the Lunenburg Swimming Pool or a charity dear to Edgar.
“A father is neither an anchor to hold us back nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.”
