It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph (Joe) Alexander Blackwood – a dad, husband, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Joe passed away peacefully with family by his side on August 26, 2024, at the age of 87 in Toronto, Ontario at the Sunnybrook Hospital. Joe’s life may have ended early to some, but he lived longer than anyone expected, including himself and with the best attitude. Joe lived with kidney disease for many years, but he managed it with great fortitude and grace.
Joe was a very generous, kind soul with a huge heart – a heart of gold. He was always in good cheer with a big smile on his face and had the ability to brighten everyone’s day no matter how dark the situation was. Joe had a great sense of humor and a big personality. Oh, how he will be missed!
Joe had a love for fishing in his earlier days but, as he grew older, and at a slower pace, he turned his passion to the Toronto Blue Jays. To say that Joe loved baseball is an understatement right up until his final days.
He is survived by his wife Beverly; Daughters — Joan, Sharon, Patricia (Maurice), Janet (Richard), Angela and Donna (Jermone); Sons — Patrick (Judith) and Rohan (Ena) and stepdaughter, Natalie. Lovingly remembered by his Grandkids: Michael (Sadie), Leopold (Keeva), Renee (Mark), Cottreal, Darren, Ruddia and Ruddana (twins), Jermaine (Lindsey), Clive Jr., Richan (Jason), Shelly-Ann, Grace, Shanille, Shawn, Sherrine, Christopher, Tamika, Samantha and Ky-Asia and many great grand-children. Joe is also fondly remembered by his eight sisters and 10 brothers. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, cousins and a large circle of friends. Besides his parents, Levi and Clarianna, Joe was predeceased by many before him including his brothers – Edley, Rudolph, Frank and Woodrow — who now will form one heck of a ball team on the field of glory.
This is not just our loss, but it is huge loss to our entire family, friends and beyond as there was so much more to Joe than just dad, though to us that was his greatest role.
We would like to thank all the staff at Sunnybrook Hospital who took such wonderful care of our father over the years with such dignity, hope and professionalism and even extended the same care and compassion to his family. And a special thanks to the doctors and staff in the Dialysis Unit and all the staff in the Intensive Care Unit on the 4th floor in the D Wing in his last week.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Accettone Funeral Home Limited, Ajax, Ontario.
