Ada Eileen Slade Obituary
On April 1, 2024, Ada Eileen Slade, at the age of 80, left this world to celebrate the first Heavenly birthday with Hubert, the love of her life, in the presence of the Lord.
“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”
Ada was born on Samson’s Island on December 31, 1943 the youngest child of Gordon and Meta Potter. Due to the death of her father and illness of her mother, she was adopted by Pastors Frank (father’s cousin) and Hazel Bursey as a toddler. While being raised in Botwood, she would spend much time during the summers with her biological family and beloved stepfather on Samson’s Island, being blessed by loving and being loved by both families. Ada enjoyed attending Camp Emmanuel in Long Pond throughout her childhood and teenage years. This is where she met the future love of her life, Hubert, with the introductory question to him, “Are you saved?”. Many years later, they were reintroduced by her buddy, Edna Lidstone (Best) when he came to Botwood to teach.
He must have gotten saved, because they fell in love and were married on August 6, 1965. Her greatest desire was fulfilled when she became the mother of four children: Philip (Karen), Lois (Bruce), Carla Diamond (Peter) and Geoffrey (Shona), continued when she chose to be a foster parent and intensified with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ada completed a course in Commerce and began her career as a bank teller in Stephenville. When she moved to Botwood with her little family, she continued to work for the Bank of Montreal. Later, she became the secretary for Farmer’s Marketing and finished her career as secretary of L. P. Purchase Academy.
Ada had a very quiet disposition, but she could be quite the character, often being a practical joker to those around her. She loved playing board games with close friends, where she was known to cheat every now and then. Ada’s generous spirit was enjoyed by many unexpected neighbours and friends by the gifting of her unmatched culinary skills.
Ada was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Hubert Slade, her parents (Pastors Frank and Hazel Bursey, Gordon and Meta Baker and stepfather, William Baker), her brothers (Elmer and David Bursey, and Wallace Potter), her sister Joyce Dicks and her father and mother in law, John and Vera Slade. She leaves to mourn her loving children, six grandchildren: Garrett Slade, Cody (Katie) Diamond, Charity (Shannon) Pope, Erin (Dishone) Gillingham, Jaden (Ashley) Diamond, Noah (Chelsea) Slade and her prides and joys, Caspian Pope and Elise Gillingham (great grandchildren). She also leaves to mourn her brothers Arnold (Joan) Bursey, Melvin (Leona) Potter, sisters Selma (Ted) Quinlan, Bessie Harnett and Shirley (George) Powell, honourably children, Glen Leyte, Brad and Karen Sheppard, along with numerous in laws and family, whom she dearly loved, along with a circle friends.
Many thanks are extended to the staff of Lane’s Retirement Home, Botwood and Central Newfoundland Health who have gone above and beyond in their care for her. Her life celebration will be conducted at JPT in Botwood on Friday, April 5, at 1:00pm. Special thanks are extended to our honorary cousin, friend and pastor, Moral Bess.
