Tony Williams, age 70, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 27, 2023 in Okotoks, Alberta.
Born in Winnipeg, Tony attended the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1977 with a B.Sc. (Honours) in Actuarial Mathematics. He went on to an accomplished career as a consulting actuary, founding PBI Actuarial Consultants Ltd. in 2008, and serving as a member of the Actuarial Standards Board from 2014-2018.
Throughout his career Tony worked with Indigenous clients across Canada, providing actuarial and investment consulting for First Nation Settlement Trusts and other trust funds. Following his retirement in 2016, Tony devoted much of his time to volunteer work and philanthropy. Tony served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Verna J Kirkness Foundation until shortly before his passing and volunteered for the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network (WISN) in multiple capacities. Tony was given the name Necetenmnin (“Leader”) and presented with an Eagle Feather in recognition of his work with the Indigenous community.
Tony was a passionate advocate for higher education and established several bursaries at the University of Manitoba to support Indigenous students in the sciences. He was a member of U of M Dean of Science’s External Advisory Board, a Member of the Alumni Council, and a Member of the WAWTAY Advisory Board.
In addition to his volunteer work and involvement in higher education, Tony had many other interests. Never one to sit still, he was an active marathon runner, hiker and trekker, mountaineer (once scaling Mount Kilimanjaro), scuba diver and golfer. He also enjoyed painting, music, and motorcycles. He collected and restored classic cars and was a member of the Northern Mopar Motor Club.
Tony leaves behind Hazel (his wife of 48 years), son Rob (Kerri and grandchildren Connor and Cadence), daughter Sarah (Craig and granddaughter Delaney), sister Sherry (Sandra and nephews Jordan and Travis), half-sisters Karen and Marie, and half-brother Fred.
Thanks to the Foothills Country Hospice for the compassionate care Tony received in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Verna J Kirkness Foundation.
A celebration of Tony’s life will be held in the coming months.
