John “Jack” Charmichael

We are saddened by the death of Jack Carmichael, husband, father, poppy, grandpa and great grandpa, age 83, at home, in the presence of his loving family on Saturday, June 10, 2023.
Born in Plaister Mines, Cape Breton, Jack was the son of the late Hector and Lillian Carmichael.
Jack is survived, and will be greatly missed by his wife Erma (Lamb), son Dr. Stephen (Dr. Paula) Carmichael, daughters Jackie (Dr. Steven) MacDougall and Tanya (Russell) Townsend; grandchildren Andrew (Steph) MacDougall, Matthew (Arianna) MacDougall and Natalie MacDougall, William, Katie, Ian and Lindsay Carmichael, Jack and Sam Townsend; great-grandchildren Atticus, Kiera, Alex, Ash and Mikayla. Jack is also survived by his sister Mary MacDonald (Dougald deceased) and family in Victoria, BC, sisters-in-law Shirley (Gordon deceased) Dickey, Bonnie (Raymond deceased) Salter, Martha (Henry deceased) Thibeault, Kathleen (Ken deceased) MacIheron, Naomi (Allan deceased) Lamb; brothers-in-law Rodney (Doreen) Lamb, David (Susie) Lamb, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Hector and Lillian, Jack was predeceased by his step-father Archie Carmichael, brother Chesley Skeard, brothers-in-law Gordon Dickey, Raymond Salter, Ken McIlheron, Henry MacLeod, Dougald MacDonald, Bill and Stephen Lamb; sisters Norma MacLeod and Kay Carmichael; sister-in-law Caroline and husband Dan Fleet.
Jack served for three years in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1959-1962 and then became manager of Singer Sewing Centre for a few years. Jack, along with his wife Erma, operated a Home for Special Care for 26 years, where all guests were cared for and treated like family with love, respect and dignity. A carpenter by trade, Jack owned Northern Building and Woodworking Inc. In later years he also enjoyed creating many beautiful pieces of furniture and wood crafts, which he happily passed on to family and friends. He was an accomplished musician and enjoyed all kinds of music, especially violin and guitar. Jack was gifted with an amazing voice and loved to entertain at kitchen parties in his younger years. Until open heart surgery in 2014, he enjoyed golfing with his buddies, many of whom have passed on (probably teeing off at Seaview with Joe, John and Ross as we speak!!).
Though the past ten years have been a struggle at times, Jack was able to be cared for at home. The family extends our sincere thanks to Dr. Steven MacDougall and all those who cared for Jack during many illnesses and surgeries over several years; Cape Breton Cancer Center, Heart Function Clinic, QEII heart specialists, End of Life Palliative Care team, and the always cheerful VON nurses who treated Jack with dignity and kindness.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral service by request. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
