Willem ‘Bill’ Mast, passed peacefully at his home in Chatham while surrounded by family on Sunday, September 11, 2022 and he is now finally resting with his Heavenly Father. Born in Smilde, the Netherlands, 91 years ago. Son of the late Feitze and Willempje Mast.
Much loved husband of Suze (nee Wagenaar) for 67 years. Beloved father of Sonja Mast (Tom Starks), Willi Kirenko (Nestor) and Fred Mast (Sue). Opa of Jessica and Erica Witheridge, and ‘Old Opa’ to seven great grandchildren.
Bill was one of 10 children born on the Mast farm in Holland. He was a kind brother and brother in law of Reina, Coby, Jaap & Sanneke, Geesje, Sarah, Hetty & Art, and Lennie. He was predeceased by siblings Christina, Roelie, Willi, Sietske and Wim and brothers and sister-in-law Roelof, Jelle, Henk, Kees, Gerard, Piet, Jaap, John, Ted & Judy.
Bill was in awe and a lover of the wonders of God’s creation and creatures in nature. He marvelled at the beauty of plants, bugs, gardens, fruit trees, lakes and streams, and enjoyed fishing and duck hunting with friends and colleagues. He had great joy over the years with his beloved black labs Dutchess, Willow, Blue, Echo and Blue II and most recently their Chihuahua Bo. He most enjoyed his work in environmental and marsh management and also served many years as a volunteer in disaster relief work with CRWRC (once working alongside Former President Jimmy Carter). Suze and Bill have been members at First Christian Reformed Church in Chatham.
A family graveside service will take place at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Special thanks to his ‘helpers’ Tricia, Stacy, Michelle, Matthew, Sarah and Heidi. In lieu of flowers, Bill would have wished for the hungry to be fed. Please consider a memorial donation directed to the CRWRC World Renew, the Canadian Foodgrains Bank or Chatham Outreach for Hunger.
