Obituary
Verla Mary (Dressler) Hobson passed away peacefully in Gibsons, BC, on October 1, 2022, at the age of 92.
Verla is survived by her sisters Kassandra Kares and Denise Montgomery, and brother Roger Dressler; sons Bill (Janet), Dave, John, and Brian (Gloria); grandchildren Matthew, Michael, Olivia, and Courtney; and great-grandchildren Cooper, Oliver, and Henry. Verla was predeceased by her husband Jim, sisters Darlene and Florence, and brothers Floyd and Ralph.
Verla will be dearly missed by friends and family who knew her as a gentle and compassionate woman. Those closest to Verla also knew of her strength, resilience and resourcefulness.
Verla was born on September 7, 1930, in Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan. She was the first of eight children born to Lothar and Marcella (Mager) Dressler. In Saskatchewan, a life of hard work on the family farm was made more difficult during the Great Depression, and in 1942, the Dresslers moved to Fort St. John, BC. Verla graduated from high school there in 1948.
That same year, Verla began training at St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in Vancouver. In 1952, she was working at the hospital in Duncan, BC, when she met a medical student named Jim Hobson. They married six months later.
Verla and Jim brought their children to the Sunshine Coast in the early 1960s, back when the hospital was located in Garden Bay. Jim set up his medical practice in Gibsons. Verla devoted herself to raising her four boys, but she was also an energetic community volunteer, particularly with the hospital auxiliary and the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation. For many years, Verla also enjoyed the company of fellow bridge enthusiasts in the Gibsons area.
The family is grateful for the care Verla received from the wonderful staff at the Good Samaritan Christenson Village in Gibsons.
