Obituary
Stuart Leslie Harvey died of natural causes early in the morning of April 29 at his residence in Lark Harbour.
He was born on Sept 25, 1941 in Laceby, Lincolnshire, UK to Leslie Harvey and Mabel Harvey nee Saunderson of England. He was raised in a farming community by his widowed mother and his early life in wartime England includes hearing explosions of the aircraft shelling of the Battle of Britain.
He married Susan Forrest Harvey (b 1940) nee Swift on July 14, 1962 in Winter Haven Florida and was pre-deceased by her in 2014. They relocated to Canada in 1967 to Bradore Bay, Labrador where they worked together in a one room schoolhouse. Their life in Lark Harbour began serendipitously when he received a reply from a fisherman who lived in Lark Harbour who retrieved the message in a bottle he had thrown off the Labrador ferry. While educating and inspiring students as school principal of St. James school until his retirement, he also served as a justice of the peace for many years, and on the town council including a stint as mayor. He was extensively involved in the Anglican Church for many years in the choir and as a lay minister. Later in life he faithfully wrote the much acclaimed “Blow me Downer” community newsletter and wrote a number of historical pieces about the Bay of Islands, including researching much local genealogy.
He is survived by his 3 children William (Bill) Harvey with his wife Eileen and daughter Juliet living in Innisfil, Ontario; Margaret (Maggie) and her husband Kevin MacNeil and son William in Winter Haven Florida; Frances Harvey and her husband Dean Hutchings, children Susan and Thomas in Brantford, Ontario and one faithful furry companion, Raffi.
As per Stuart’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022 at 1:00 PM, St. James Anglican Church, Lark Harbour, with Rev. Effie Organ officiating. Interment to take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, there are no flowers by request. Memorial donations in Stuart’s memory may be made to the local SPCA or Oxfam.
