ALLAN, Mary Florence Shirley (née Morin, formerly Tennant)
It is with great sorrow that we announce that Shirley passed away peacefully in her 87th year following a short illness at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on September 3, 2020. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Lynn Allan and by her children Kevin Tennant, Jeff Tennant (Susana) and Heather Tennant, as well as her grandchildren Jordan, Bailey, Sophie, Zahir, and Amaia, and her first cousin Conrad Morin. Shirley is also sadly missed by Lynn’s sisters Evril, Joan, and Georgina, and his sister-in-law Liz. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Family was her top priority as it had been for her father, a priority that was expressed through the unconditional love, compassion and concern she always showed for all of us.
Born in Timmins on September 28, 1935, to Mary and Fred Morin, Shirley moved with her parents in the early 1950s to Mattawa, and a few years later to North Bay. While raising her three children, she worked for many years as a very cherished school secretary with the Nipissing District Roman Catholic Separate School Board. An active member of the Catholic Women’s League for sixty-three years, Shirley’s Catholic faith sustained her throughout her life. She gave back to her parish community by singing in the choir and serving in many other capacities at Corpus Christi Church in North Bay and then at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Atikokan for the past thirty years. Heather, Kevin, and Jeff were able to spend quality time at her bedside in her final weeks to do everything possible to reciprocate the loving care she had shown her children for more than sixty years. Saying she is greatly missed does not do justice to the sadness we all feel at her passing, but we can honour her memory by living according to the values of love, compassion, and family unity that Shirley embodied throughout her life.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 119 Hawthorne Road, Atikokan, on Saturday, September 10 at 10:00 a.m. Interment of ashes at Emo Municipal Cemetery will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Hearing Services (chs.ca) would be much appreciated.
