Ruth’s Obituary
On February 21, 2022, our lovely mother Ruth Lena Florence Astbury (Pehleman) (age 92) passed peacefully at Grey Gables in Markdale, Ontario, joining her beloved husband George Robert (Bob) (d 2000, age 74) and her eldest child Michael Allen (d 1966, age 15). Ruth was a dear mother of Debra Russell (Bob Peacock), Vernon BC, and Miles Astbury (Susan), West Grey, ON; a loving grandmother of Care (Jason), Candle (Matt), Michael (Allie), and Leah (Drew); and a proud, devoted great-grandmother of Luca and Sam.
Ruth was predeceased by her sister Isobel Beverly Jane (d 1974), and brother-in-law Austin Batley (d 2009); and her brother Donald Trevor Murdock Pehleman (d 2004), and sister-in-law Madeline Grace (Mole) (d 2018). Ruth is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Ruth and George (Bob) were married for 51 years, moved numerous times with the Armed Forces, grieved the death of their eldest son, cherished many long friendships, loved their 3 years in Newfoundland, and finally settled in Markdale ON, which reminded them of the Eastern Townships of QC, where they had grown up, met, married, and had two of their three children. Ruth was a 60+ year survivor of breast cancer with its damaging radiation, and the later loss of an arm. She continued to crotchet blankets for gifts for many babies. Ruth was always sharing with others her ability to be positive, thankful, and hopeful, when they faced pain, grief, sadness, and sorrow.
Ruth worked many jobs throughout her life: small store owner in Bury QC; mother; K-Mart cashier in St. John’s NL; Junior Footwear in Markdale; and support worker in Markdale group homes.
As per her wishes, there will not be a celebration of life and her ashes will be interred at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society; without their research we could have lost our mom when we were youngsters. Or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Ruth’s family would like to especially thank the staff of Grey Gables for their loving, gentle, and compassionate care. Mom cherished your quick visits before you left for home and your shared treats.
