Paul Roy Pearl December 15th 2022

Paul Roy Pearl
August 16, 1943 – December 15, 2022
Passed away suddenly at home in Ottawa, in his 80th year. Beloved husband of Fran (Cukierman) for 57 amazing years. Loving father of Davina and Judi and adored Grampa of Louis. Cherished brother-in-law of Bunny (Natasha, Riva) and Annette (Shaul). Devoted son of the late Janina Grosglik and Aaron Perlmutter, and loving stepson of Joshua. Survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Australia, Israel, Europe and the US.
Paul’s life was undoubtedly a love story for the ages. He and Franny met as toddlers, when her family – his cousins – arrived in Melbourne from New Zealand in 1947. From that moment on, their lives were inextricably intertwined. Countless family gatherings, childhood antics brimming with Paul’s trademark chutzpah, summer camps in ‘the movement’ (Hashomer Hatzair) with a close-knit group of friends from Melbourne’s Jewish community, all swirling around a multitude of milestones marked, celebrated and mourned together.
Rooted in this rich shared history, Paul and Franny’s actual romance blossomed in their late teens. Soon after their marriage in 1965, and the completion of Paul’s PhD in Physics, his itchy feet took the young couple first to Paris where he worked at the Atomic Energy Commission. Their small flat in avenue du Suffren did not disappoint, indulging them with a view of the Eiffel Tower without even having to get up off the sofa.
Two years later Paul and Franny crossed the channel for the bustle and excitement of London, where Paul worked first as a post-doc researcher at Royal Holloway College, and then as a lecturer at Chelsea College. It was during these five hectic but fulfilling years in London that Paul’s heart grew two sizes bigger with the arrival of cherished daughters Davina and Judi. Sparked by a fortuitous job offer, in 1974 the proud parents set sail once again to finally settle in Ottawa with their two gorgeous girls, where the novelty of snowy winters made Aussie Paul think he’d arrived in paradise.
The years tumbled on as the girls grew, new friendships were sown, and Paul’s entrepreneurial gusto spurred him to rally a group of his fellow employees at Computing Devices to launch a new high-tech start-up (before anyone knew what a start-up was): Dipix, specializing in remote sensing and image analysis. Right from the get-go and throughout the many years and various phases of Dipix’s evolution, Paul was always in charge – respected and appreciated as a thoughtful, visionary leader and avid champion of his employees.
Paul relished crossing things off his bucket list. In 1989 he took on the biggest nautical challenge on that list when he sailed across the Atlantic in a 42’ yacht, The Happy Prince, followed by a six-month stint touring France and the Mediterranean while living on the boat with his family.
Paul’s later years were vividly coloured by his lifelong abiding passions (in addition to Franny), when in retirement he was finally able to devote himself to them full time: travel, sailing, self-education, theatre, classical music, and Franny’s cooking. His love for Bach in particular was legend – St Matthews Passion stirred his heart like no other. His boundless spirit of adventure propelled these constant travel companions around the world, from the Amazon to the Arctic and a thousand destinations in between. Traveling in summertime was however out of the question, as that was when Paul revelled in cottage life at his beloved Chateau Roo, his days energetically filled with equal parts swimming, sailing and building.
And for all this, his greatest source of joy was unequivocally his only grandchild, Louis. He simply adored being a Grampa, doted on the boy, and was adored in return.
