Maureen Lynn Akapew –
Sundown Sweetgrass Woman

We are saddened to announce the passing of Maureen Lynn Akapew, on Thursday April 28th, 2022 in Regina Saskatchewan, at the age of 60.
Maureen was predeceased by her parents Lawrence « Walls » Bellegarde and Catherine Akapew, her sister Karen Lavoie, brother Sheldon Akapew, brother in-laws Gary Gordon, and James Maurice, and her son, Sheldon Bitternose. Maureen is survived by her children, Randine (Heath), Austin (Solange), Cheyenne (Nathan) and Tia. Her siblings, Nadine, Lawrence, Laureen and Delanne (Donnie). Adopted children, Travis Oochoo, Yolainha Machiskinic and Zaya Musqua. Adopted sister Bev Bellegarde and special Grandsons Quannah Bellegarde & Courage Bitternose-Akapew and 13 grandchildren. Maureen is also survived by her adopted family from Starblanket Cree Nation, Verna Starr (Brian), Denita, Joanne (Gary), Cindy, Sonia (Chief Mike Starr) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Maureen had dedicated her life to helping others, she loved children. Her children and grandchildren were her world. She made her career in childcare, and had other family who loved her at work. The family would like to acknowledge Stepping Stones Childcare Cooperative in Regina, and the children and staff she had impacted.
Traditional wake will begin at 4:00pm on Sunday May 1st, at Whitecalf Gym, Lebret Sk. Funeral service will be held the following day, Monday May 2nd, 2022 at 11:00am in the same location. Maureen will be laid to rest at Starblanket Cree Nation.
