Obituary
Mary passed away peacefully in her 72nd year November 27, 2022 in Port Elgin, On. She was a mother, an adoring grandmother and fur-parent. Mary was a loving and spirited mother to Megan Johnson (nee Dunn) mother in-law to Andrew Johnson, grandmother to her “Pooh Bear” Winnie and her beloved fur-babies Roxy, Teddy and Lucy. Predeceased by her father Sir Maj. John “Jack” Gross and Margaret (nee Guymer) of Grimsby and Port Elgin and many family pets. Mary also leaves behind family members Linda Gross, John (Margaret), Catherine Gross of Niagara and Michael (Andrea) of London and many nieces and nephews whom she had treasured memories with. Her absence will be felt by the Johnson family of Port Elgin, her Cottage pals and the friends who became like family in Port Elgin, Niagara and Fort Lauderdale from her years of living in Florida.
She was very active within the YMCA in London in her youth as a gymnast and self-proclaimed Track-Star, earned a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from Western University in 1975 and a subsequent Masters of Education from Brock University. A Primary teacher for the Niagara District School Board, Mary retired in 2007 after over 30 years of teaching. Where she also choreographed hundreds of gymnastic routines for her students, primarily at Grand Avenue in Grimsby and organized many gymnastic competitions for the Niagara District School Board.Mary was a character and every interaction with her was a memorable one. Her love for her daughter and son-in-law was the gold standard and the love that she had for Winnie will live on in their shared smile.
In lieu of flowers, her family would encourage those wishing to contribute to shop local in their communities – a passion Mary was known for wherever she lived or contribute to the Angel Fund at the Southampton Pet Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will take place in the Summer of 2023 for those wishing to attend.
