Mary Agatha (Bown) Majury, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 19, 2022 at the High River Hospital in High River, Alberta at 91 years of age.
Mary was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, the youngest daughter of Mildred and Arnold Bown. She was predeceased by her best friend and husband, Howard Majury in 2019, as well as by her sister Roberta. She was a loving mother to Janet (Murray) Lloyd, Sandy (Roger) Davis and Cyndi (Dan) Eldridge, and a loving grandmother to : Tara (Cade Mckinnon – deceased) Ross, Nathan (Kathleen) Ross, Becky (Albert Sorensen) Davis, Joe (Gabrielle) Davis and Jessica Eldridge. She also had six great grandchildren: Capri and Ryker; Hudson and Lachlan; Charlotte and Maclay. She is survived by three nephews: Richard Majury, Arnold Macmillan and Neil Macmillan. Family was very important to Mary. She especially enjoyed the grandchildren, teaching them skills such as driving, cursive writing and shared her enjoyment of collectibles and playing cards.
As a young girl growing up in Lennoxville, Quebec, Mary enjoyed singing, tap dancing and riding her horse with her dad, when not keeping him company at his business, Bown Handleworks. She discovered her love of baking and sewing by helping her mother. She developed skill in many forms of handiwork including needlepoint and crochet.
Mary met Howard and their life together of 69.5 years started in 1949. Early in their marriage, Mary trained as a hair stylist, achieving a master’s certificate level of expertise. She specialized in permanent waves, which was a very popular style at that time. Once their daughters were born, Mary thrived in her role as a mother and homemaker. She was a strong, compassionate and supportive role model for her three daughters.
While living in Lennoxville, Quebec, they purchased property on Moulton Hill and raised sheep. As Howard was often away for work, Mary managed to look after the girls and do the sheep chores alone. She was a very supportive wife!
In 1961, Howard and Mary moved to Stanstead, Quebec. Although they built a new home in town, it was not long before they purchased a farm seven miles outside of town. They bred Newfoundland dogs (much to the delight of Mary and daughters), as well as Polled Herefords. For several years, Howard and Mary enjoyed buffalo in an enclosure on the farm. Mary tended a large garden, in addition to canning and preserving the produce. She played critical roles in support of the farm, including transporting and feeding the haying work crew!
Mary believed strongly in supporting her community and demonstrated this sense of responsibility in part, through her memberships to the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), and Allergro Service Clubs, as well as being a member of the United Church Women’s (UCW) group. She was well known for her creative skills in crafts and home decor. She had amazing organizational abilities and was always involved in community activities ranging from tea and bake sales to rummage sales. Mary had a wonderful sense of humour and displayed it as only a lady could.
All of her grandchildren remember her cooking and baking abilities fondly! Everything from breads, pies and doughnuts to squares and cookies. She would welcome drop-in guests to a full sit down dinner that looked like she spent days preparing.
In 1988, Mary and Howard decided to move to Alberta to be closer to their children and their families. They loved travelling and drove their RV all over North America and enjoyed meeting up with friends in many different locales. Mary contributed to the restoration of Howard’s Model T’s by doing the upholstery for the interiors . For several years, Mary assisted her youngest daughter in her grooming salon by bathing and brushing. She created the show curtains for cat shows and participated in showing her daughter’s pure bred cats for many years.
In more recent years it was important to both Mary and Howard that they live in their home together for as long as possible. Mary moved into Madison Manor in Nanton, Alberta in January 2019, one week prior to Howard’s death.
The family wishes to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to all the caregivers and staff at Madison Manor in Nanton. Mary lived there from January 2019, until her admission to the High River Hospital 5 days before her death. They provided her with wonderful, compassionate care and we know she loved them individually as her family members. As the world struggled through the challenges of Covid, the family was relieved she was being looked after by this group of very caring and capable individuals. Additionally, the family thanks all the physicians and nursing staff in emergency and on the third floor of the High River Hospital for their care and compassion. A special thank you to Dr. J Coetzee of Mokala Clinic in Okotoks for being such an outstanding family doctor for many years.
A Memorial Tea will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2022 (commencing at 2:00 pm) at Snodgrass Funeral Home in High River, Alberta. If friends or family wish to share a story or a few words in tribute to Mary, please plan to do so, or forward your tribute/story to sandydavis@shaw.ca to be shared at the Memorial.
