Obituary
On her 96th birthday, Margaret passed peacefully in the comfort of her home where she had lived for more than 92 years. Family and friends were by her side. October 15 was significant in Margaret’s life; it was her birthday, her father’s birthday, and her wedding anniversary.
Born in Welland, Margaret moved with her family to Hamilton when she was three years old. They settled on Hess Street and Augusto Capitani, Margaret’s father, set up a blacksmith shop on the property. Five generations have celebrated life, sharing laughter and tears, in the little house on Hess Street. Christmas Eves, singing, dancing, feasting, bocce and gardening were highlights of life there. This house also became a second home to Toscani immigrants and their families. Many cherish their memories of the house on Hess where the back door was always open and there was always room at the table. Margaret met the love of her life, Tommy Campbell, on a blind date. He was stationed at Mount Hope Royal Air Force Base. For six years while Tommy’s service duties took him to various parts of the world, Margaret and he were steady penpals. They married on October 15, 1949 and were devoted to each other for thirty years until Tommy’s passing in 1979. In the 1940’s Margaret played on a ladies fastball team. The team played in Eastern Canada and the US. Margaret was the pitcher and was known and feared as “The South Paw Hurler.” For several years Margaret enjoyed bowling for the All Souls Bowling League. She was also a member of the Children of Mary. Margaret worked as a Floor Lady at Tucketts Tobacco from 1943-1967.
Margaret loved to travel and enjoyed many trips through Canada, USA and Europe. She made friends everywhere she went. She loved people and new places, but was happiest at home on Hess Street with family and lifelong friends. Because Margaret was loved by so many, she had several nicknames: Patrona (The Boss), Miss America, Maggie, Casino Queen and Dancing Queen. She really deserved the last one because she danced in high heels until she was 92! Margaret will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and generosity. Margaret was always curious and a keen observer of life. No one could pull anything over on her. Her infectious laugh and her smile that could light up a room will be forever remembered.
Margaret was predeceased by Tommy Campbell, Augusto and Eugenia Capitani, Ciro Capitani (the late Alice), Delora Boyd (the late Richard). In-laws David and Isabel Campbell, Rae Morgan (the late Jack), Betty Campbell, Jean Pond (the late Fred), and Archie Campbell (the late Babbs).
Margaret will be sadly missed by her beloved daughter and light of her life, Karen (Joe Quaranta), her “Adopted Daughter” Susan Millen(Forli) (the late Rick). Step Grandchildren Frank Quaranta, Joey Quaranta (Ashley), and Step Great Grandchild Francesco. Nieces Debbie Boyd-Whitley (the late Bob), Patricia Gerow (Don) and Barbara Williams. Cousins Joe and Guidetta Giannasi, Domenic and Madeline Giannasi, Carla Giannotti (the late Oriano), Adele Granata (the late Mario) and extended family in Vancouver, Italy, England, California and Oregon. Olympio Mesquita, family friend for 43 years. And Michael and Maggie, neighbours who always kept an eye on Margaret. Special thanks to Jane Schwartz, who took such great care of Margaret, PSWs from CBI, St. Elizabeth, and Bayshore. Everett Colburne who kept Hess Street in great shape. And Dr Pray, Dr Alshurafa, and Nirja (pharmacist) for their continuing great care. Visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL on Wednesday, October 19, from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. with Vigil prayers at 3:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at All Souls Church in Hamilton on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
