Lillian’s Obituary
Sutherland, Lillian Fraser – September 20, 1926 – August 3, 2022: After a long decline, Gram passed away at Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche. She was predeceased by her groom of seventy–two years, J. Donald Sutherland in 2019. She was also predeceased by infant son, David Robert, in 1949 and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Lynch) Sutherland in 2002. Known to the family as ‘Gram’ she survived by sons, Lee (Lynn), Douglas (Paulette), and Eric (Bonnie). Her grandchildren, a constant source of pride, are Dawn (Carey), Dale (Greg), Allan (Patricia), Sandy (Leigh Ann), Aimée and Lynda (Calum). Her great grandchildren are Ellis, Peyton, Kaeden, Jaelyn, and Henry. Gram considered Michael and Adele Stokoe to be her additional family and they have been a much appreciated support to her and to ‘Pa’ for many years. Father and Mother left The Falls in 1964 to live in Alberta and later Ontario, returning to Earltown in 1968 and then retiring to Truro in 1994. Gram was the youngest of George and Jessie Fraser’s children born on the farm next to the Brule Bridge. She was predeceased by all of her siblings: Ellen (Noble) Hayman, Jane (William) Donaldson, Annie (Orrin) Vincent, Edna (Malcolm) MacLeod, Kay (Hector) Cunningham; brothers, Hugh (Aline), George (Jessie/Joyce), Henry, William (Dorothy/Jean) and David (Dorothea).
Their mother thought so much of education that all six girls taught in one room schools. Gram taught in Nova Scotia, Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia. She had many nieces and nephews and was looking forward to her first visit in September with her niece Mary McGinnis and husband Glenn who reside in Phoenix, Arizona. Our mother was very community minded being a strong church supporter and member of the Eastern Star. Many of her good deeds were never made public.
Having had much experience with personal attention to needs of the elderly, there are not enough words to thank son Douglas and his wife Paulette for their service. As Pa once related, “Douglas and Paulette are going flat out to do everything for us.”
The family extends a sincere thanks to the time and attention given to our mother by the staff of Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche. If so desired, donations to Willow Lodge and or The Falls Cemetery would be gratefully received. Interment will be held at a later date in The Falls Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
