Ken’s Obituary
Surrounded by his loving family, the passing of Kenneth Angus Henwood, husband of Karen Henwood (nee Millar) of Springhill, NS occurred on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS. Born on May 31, 1944 in Springhill, NS, he was a son of the late Sampson “Stanley” and Annie (Holden) Henwood. He enjoyed hunting and fishing; especially with his children, even if he had to occasionally carry one of them to get where they were going. He loved to get out and go for a drive to the market, an auction, yard sales or to Murphy’s for a plate of fish and chips.
Ken was an active part of his community throughout his life. In his church, All Saint’s Anglican, he served on many committees spent several years as a church warden and helped oversee the building of the church rectory. On behalf of the church he was also appointed by the Anglican Bishop of Nova Scotia as a board member of All Saint’s Hospital where he helped realize the hospital expansion. He spent time as President of the Boy Scout Association where he enjoyed participating in activities such as camping at Simpson’s Lake. He could usually be found helping in the cookhouse. He was an active member of the Springhill Chamber of Commerce and a volunteer guide for the Springhill Miner’s Museum where he was recognized as a Volunteer of the Year for his dedication and hard work. In recent years, he enjoyed his role as Conductor for Ottawa HouseMuseum’s historical train ride in Parrsboro, NS.
He was involved in politics for much of his life. For decades he could be found placing campaign signs, driving voters to the polls and sat as a board member for the Progressive Conservative Party, for both the provincial and federal ridings; serving a term as Interim President of the PC Association of Cumberland Centre. Beyond his work behind the scenes, Ken took a more direct role in municipal politics when he won a seat as a Councillor for the Town of Springhill. He took special pride in representing the town at events for its Centennial Celebrations in 1989 and helping to build the giant wooden birthday cake mural.
Whether he was working in the coal mines of Springhill, River Hebert and Pennsylvania, supervising woodworking or out in the community building barns, picnic tables and boat swings, Ken spent his life working with his hands. He knew the value of a dollar through hard work and passed this on to his children. His family was the most important part of his life and he always worked hard to provide for them. Right up until his last day, he made sure his family would have the support they needed, even in his absence.
In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Ken is survived by his children, Kimberley Butler (John)Tucson, AZ, Troy Henwood (Annie LePage) of Grand Barachois, NB and Bill Henwood (Tracy) of Fredericton, NB; grandchildren, China Butler of Orlando, FL, Lindsay Caffelle (Jake) of Spring Hill, TN, Marcel Steeves (Megan Till), Morgan Henwood and Alex Henwood all of Fredericton, NB; great-granddaughter, Everleigh; brothers, Tom Henwood of Amherst, NS and Doug Henwood (Heather) of Springhill, NS; brother-in-law, Bill Millar of Parrsboro, NS; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
