Rutledge, Joyce May (née Irwin)
Passed away peacefully on her own terms (M.A.I.D.) on August 24th, 2022 at Ross Memorial Hospital, several weeks shy of her 95th birthday. She will leave a big hole in the lives of her family. She was predeceased by her parents, May and Harold Irwin and her sister Gwen Ackerman. She is survived by her sister Linda Jenkins and her loving son, Randy Rutledge and wife, Bev. She will be greatly missed by her two grandchildren, Kyle (Carrie) and Carly Reid (Mike). She played a special part in the lives of her great grandchildren Ozzy, Addison and Avery. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
She started working in the office at Agincourt C.I. in the mid 1950’s with only her Gr. 12 diploma. While working in the office she took courses to get her Gr. 13 diploma, making up the hours at night. In the coming years, she obtained her teaching certificate and degree in English from York University. In 1972, she was made Assistant Head of the Business Dept., at the same school at which she began as a secretary 16 years earlier. She was at Agincourt C.I. for a total of 37 years.
She was an accomplished hiker with several hiking groups and successfully ran the Toronto Marathon at the age of 58. She has always been a strong, independent woman who selflessly valued family and has left us with the reminder that family is everything.
A small service will be held for immediate family in the near future. If desired, donations can be made to Sleeping Children Around the World. Donations and condolences may be made through Mackey Funeral Home via cheque or online at www.mackeys.ca
