CHALUPA, João « John » Rocha Joyce
Passed peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital on Friday, December 23, 2022 in the loving company of his wife and daughters. He was a month away from his 90th birthday.
João was born in São Carlos, Terceira, Portugal, on January 23, 1933. He was a devoted husband of 62 years to Julieta. Together, they moved their family to Canada in 1966 (in time to see his beloved Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup). He built his career at Canada Brick, where he worked for over 30 years as a well-regarded colleague, before retiring in 1998. He was fortunate to enjoy 24 years of retirement surrounded by friends, family and his grandchildren whom he adored.
He loved to travel, he was an avid word-searcher, and his TV commentary was second to none. He will be deeply missed for his kindness, generosity, and devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife, Julieta; daughters Julie (David) and Ana Paula (Amandio); grandchildren Jennifer (Brent), Matthew, José, and Juliana; and great-grandson Austin.
Visitation will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home, 485 Brant St, Burlington, on Wednesday, December 28th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 2016 Blairholm Ave on Thursday, December 29th at 10:30 am. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 580 Old York Rd, Burlington. A reception will be held at the church hall following the interment.
