On Tuesday August 23, 2022 Sheila « Nan » passed away peacefully at Etobicoke General Hospital Palliative Care Ward with family close by. She was 93 years old.
She was a loving wife and mother and a cherished grandmother « Nan » and great grandmother. She was predeceased by her late husband Dr. John McIlraith, brother Neil McArthur and granddaughter Adrienne Walpert. She leaves behind four loving children Maire (Franz), Julia, Angus (Maureen) and Ewen (Fiona) along with 7 grandchildren Rachel (Aaron), Yvette, Michelle, Fergus, Gaynor, Jack and Morgan and two great grandchildren Charlotte and Benjamin.
Sheila will be missed dearly by those who loved her and knew her during her life. She will be remembered for her kind spirit, generosity and her boundless energy and optimism.
Her many hobbies and interests included family ski trips to Alpine Ski Club and Mont-Sainte-Anne, sewing, knitting, cooking, gardening, appreciating the arts, entertaining, travelling and enjoying time at her beloved family cottage on Lake Scugog and her beautiful home in Toronto.
She will also be remembered as a dedicated Family Studies teacher starting in Woodstock and then at Central Peel SS. She always promoted education and lifelong learning and enjoyed lively discussions about books, history and politics.
Her volunteer activities are too many to list but include Humber Memorial Hospital Board of Governors and first woman president of the Hospital Board of Directors, founding member and Chairman of the Board for the Rexdale Community Information Directory, member and three time president of the Canadian Federation of University Women- Weston Branch, member of the Elmer Iseler Board of Directors and the Northern Etobicoke Community Action Board of Directors.
Adrienne sent a copy of this quote to her nan in 2008 saying « That’s soooo you! »
» Special is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who has made the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth’s bounty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves. »
A small, private gathering will be held to celebrate her life.
