Janet-Rae (Minor) Thompson
October 29, 1943 – February 7, 2022
Time and time again, over the last 2 years Janet liked to prove the medical professionals wrong with her diagnosis and was truly 1 in a million. After a long and courageous battle, she passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Monday, February 7, 2022.
Janet-Rae was a wonderful woman who was loved, missed and will always be cherished by her family. “Honey” as she was called by Clay her husband of 55 years, “Mom or Momma Bear” by her Children Chris (Pavlina) and Shawna (Don), “Nanny” by her grandchildren Brittney (Mark), Travis and Cassidy (Kurt) and Great Nanny to Alexis. She was overjoyed with the recent arrival of her 3 great grandchildren Ivy, Reece and Ford. Her surviving brother Greg (Chantelle) and was pre deceased by her parents Effie and Authur “Raymond” Minor, and brothers Kenneth, Rex, Brian and Timothy.
Janet-Rae was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister who enjoyed decorating houses as the owner of Chelsea Lane Interiors, baking, painting and enjoyed her time supporting local service groups and clubs in both Collingwood and Dundalk.
Janet-Rae’s story begins October 29, 1943 as the only daughter of Effie (Brown) Minor and Authur “Raymond” Minor in St. John’s Newfoundland. When Ray came home from duty in Europe, he moved the small family to Port Colborne where Janet-Rae would grow up. In her teen years she asked the local seniors home owner for a summer job as an assistant to seniors who needed care. That started her journey to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton where she received her Registered Emergency Nursing Degree. After a short time as a nurse at Toronto Sick Children’s Hospital she transferred to St. John’s Convalescing Hospital in Willowdale. During her 4 year residence there, she met and married Clayton Thompson on June 3, 1966. The newlyweds moved a few times, and settled in Brampton to raise their children Christopher and Shawna. Janet- Rae branched out from nursing to become the manager of Visions Art Gallery. In 1987 Clay was promoted to a position in the Collingwood area and the family relocated. Janet-Rae applied her artistic side from the gallery and achieved her second degree at the Academy of Art and Design. Interior design became her passion and she was well known for her ability to make the dreams of her clients become reality.
In 2011 Janet-Rae and Clay moved for the last time to Dundalk. Janet-Rae got involved with the Dundalk Dance Association, and truly enjoyed the new friends she met, the dance competition and coming up with fundraising ideas.
When asked why she doesn’t slow down a bit and enjoy retirement, her response was always the same “if you don’t use it…you’ll loose it” She had one speed most of her life, that was always a gentle jog with a bounce.
We would like to thank the PSW’s and the professional nursing staff for their care and support over the last couple of years.
A celebration of Janet-Rae’s life will be held at a later date. As per her wishes, donations to the Dundalk Dance Association or Shelburne Feral Cat Rescue would be appreciated.
