Obituary
Jacob “Jack” Buis
North Sydney
It is with tremendous sadness and heavy hearts that we share the loss of Jacob “Jack” Maria Buis, of Seaview Drive, North Sydney, on November 5, 2022. Poppy passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. Jack was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. Above all, he was a devoted husband to his best friend, Veronica (VanVelzen) Buis.
Jack was born on August 14,1928 in Andijk, Holland. At the young age of 25, Poppy bravely left his home for a new adventure and a better life, landing in North Sydney. Two years later he was joined by Veronica, where they began to build their forever home. A warm meal, cold drink and a good laugh; the Buis home was always open to family, friends, and strangers alike. They combined their caring nature and love for hospitality with entrepreneurship, which led to years of success at The Seaview Inn and Convenience Store. Jack spent 35 years at CN Marine/Marine Atlantic where he worked as a stevedore until retirement in 1993. Jack and Vronie loved traveling, spending their winters in Florida with friends old and new, and enjoying many trips back to the old country to see loved ones.
Poppy’s greatest accomplishment was together with Vronie, raising a growing family that surrounded him every Sunday for family suppers and tarabish. He enjoyed long walks with Nanny at Munroe Park, the beautiful views from home, watching sailing and soccer. Jack was always a quiet champion of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching his sons play hockey, was a regular at the Northside rink and took pride in spending time with his only daughter, Joanne. With many grandchildren and great grandchildren, he was always very present in their lives and never failed to make each one feel special. Poppy was a “Jack” of all trades, building and creating many things for his family. Among those were prams for the sailors, trailers for camping, and best of all, the home on Seaview Drive. Jack and Vronie were proud members of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney and the Dutch community. They spent their younger years enjoying dances and later years playing weekly card games with lifelong friends.
Continuing Jack’s legacy are his loving children: Randall, Patrick (Amy), Brian (Joanne), David (Susan), Joanne (Reggie Day) and Glenn (Melody MacNeil). He was the most exemplary role model of love and integrity to his ten grandchildren: Brian Keith (Amanda), Jaclyn (Scott), Ryan (Amanda), Petra (Andrew), Breanna (Brian), Brandon (Kaelynn), Brittany (Sam), Jacob (Brigid), William and Micayla (Aidan). He was a proud great grandfather to Natalie, Taya, Elliot, Rhett, Theo and Sadie. Also surviving are his two brothers Peit and John Buis and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his forever love, Veronica Buis, his parents Antoon and Mina, his siblings Trees, Nel, Catherine, Leis, Ellen, Luke and Altoon.
Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there’s a trail of beautiful memories.
The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Peter Poulos, the VON nurses, palliative care nurses and W.J Dooley Funeral Home.
Visitation for family and friends will be held 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9th in the W.J Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated for Jack at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 10th at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Cape Breton Regional Hospital “Forget Me Nots”. Online condolences may be sent to the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary at www.wjdooley.com.
