Obituary of Helen Mary Yavis
It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Yavis announces her passing on December 25, 2022, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born in Brandon, Manitoba on August 30, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marcella Baran.
She is survived by her children Laura (Blaine) Smith, Catherine (Greg) Foster, Leslie Romans, Casey (Marjorie) Yavis, and Lynn (Michael) Park. She was proud “Grammy” to 14 grandchildren and “Great-Grammy” to 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and siblings, she was predeceased by her husband Christopher Yavis, son Conrad Yavis, son-in-law Ernie Romans, granddaughters Jacqueline Smith and Penny Park, and great-granddaughter Rebecca Smith.
While being a military wife, Helen was posted to several bases across Canada and Germany. She finally called Oromocto her home. Helen was a CWL member at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, was an avid walker, played broomball in her younger years, loved cross-country skiing, gardening, camping, and cooking. She was a great mother who loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She preferred spending time with family and did most of her activities with them.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Chalmers ER and 3 East for their exceptional care of Helen during her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s name can be made to the Oromocto Food Bank or Fredericton Homeless Shelter.
At her request, there will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Oromocto, on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at 11:00 am with Father Charles Udeh as celebrant. Internment will be at a later date. For those who wish, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Oromocto Food Bank or the Fredericton Homeless Shelter.
