Obituary for
Elsie «Lass» Karall
It is with great sadness that the family of Lass Karall announces her passing on January 17th, 2022 at the age of 89.
Lass is survived by her daughter, Charlene (George Schmidt), four sons, Robert, Ken, Don and Doug; nine grandchildren, Kevin (Corby), Darren (Shelley), Steven (Chelsie), Teague (Vanessa), Kailey (Kyle), Matthew, Thomas, Kyle and Joseph; seven great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ethan, Lucas, Morgan, Sophia, Charlee and Misha; her sister-in-laws Pauline Sachkiw and Vera Oszust; many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Ted; her parents, Peter and Josephine Sachkiw and parents-in-law, Samuel and Pearl Karall; her brother Orest Sachkiw and sister Florence Koss and brother-in-law Michael Koss and brother-in-law Rick Oszust; and grandson Nicholas Karall.
Lass was born in Mundare on September 6th, 1932 the youngest of three. For the first part of her childhood, Lass’ father worked at the grain elevator in Andrew, Alberta. At the age of five, her parents bought the Derwent Hotel. They had a very busy life maintaining and running the hotel as a family.
Lass moved to Edmonton around the age of 15 and attended St. Mary’s Catholic High School. She met Ted at the church youth group and they would walk home together. Their romance soon developed and they married in 1954. They started their family soon after with one daughter and four sons. Throughout her life, God and family were very precious to her.
Lass and Ted spent many years raising their children in Edmonton and two years in Hay River. Lass enjoyed socializing with family and friends, her and Ted hosted many parties throughout the years. They enjoyed many trips to Hawaii with and without their children. Over the summers, they rented cabins at the lake with Vera and Rick and made wonderful memories.
Lass and Ted built their acreage in 1975 where they would continue to host gatherings. Some of the most cherished memories were Christmas Eve suppers and Lass would prepare the traditional Ukrainian meal. Lass valued friendship and enjoyed the company of others. She was very pleasant and always had a smile on her face.
Alongside raising her children, Lass pursued different endeavors like Avon, hairdressing and crafts. She spent her free time needlepointing, knitting, crocheting and paper crafting.
Over the years, Lass enjoyed quality time and special visits with her grandchildren. She followed their achievements closely and cheered them on. It was a great pleasure for her to welcome new great-grandchildren into the family and they all had a special place in her heart.
Lass was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she will be truly missed by all.
