Elisabeth “Lissy” Liming Chan-Schneck passed away on December 3rd 2022 in Toronto, Ontario, while pursuing her Music Degree, at the University of Toronto.
Elisabeth began her music journey by learning piano. Her talent for music revealed itself in elementary and high school, where she learned to play instruments including the bass clarinet, clarinet, cello, harp, french horn, and violin. Her final instrument of choice was the bassoon.
With the support of her bassoon teacher Carrie To, she joined the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra – first the intermediate orchestra, and then the senior orchestra under Roger Cole’s direction until Covid caused the cessation of large gatherings.
She later joined the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. Through opportunities provided by Ian Parker’s orchestra, she played at the Orpheum in Vancouver and Kay Meek Centre in North Vancouver. In addition, she participated in ChamberFest Vancouver 2021, and 2022, where small groups of students played with professional musicians in small ensemble groups. These performances are available online at the VAM YouTube channel. She also completed the summer Baroque Music program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
After she left for University, Lissy returned to Vancouver to her High School to assist with the music program there where she would teach bassoon.
Elisabeth was a loving, empathic person, who felt a strong sense of justice and fairness. In her brief period of employment, she successfully appealed to the BC Labour Board for her and others’ rights.
Elisabeth enjoyed all things small and beautiful– crafts, dogs and cats, flowers and stuffed animals. Her interests include Japanese media and culture, Jack Kirby’s comics, hiking, snorkelling, skiing, listening to bird calls, eating and cooking, travelling, thrift stores, Don’t Starve Together, Animal Crossing, Zelda(s), video game music, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Gorillaz, Giant Steps, Mussorgsky, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Vaughn Williams, Poulenc, Satie, Saint-Saens and other composers too numerous to mention. But not Debussy.
Elisabeth had the support of many people, who very much wanted her to thrive and succeed in her dreams. We would like to thank Mme. Katy, Roger Cole, Pauline Lo, Diana Welsh, Carrie To, Ian Parker, and Eric Hall for their strength and encouragement as she pursued her love of music and negotiated her teenage years. We would also like to thank the Buenaventura family for their ongoing love and support.
Elisabeth is survived by her siblings – Aaron and Emily, her parents, Chris and Wee Shian, her grandparents Rodney, Hung Hor, John and Linda, her aunts, Krissy, Winnie, Heather and Sharon, her uncles Eddy, Mark, Mark, and Derek, and her cousins Zoe, Kai, Gayle, Ethan, Olivia, and Grace. In addition she is survived by a large number of second cousins and relatives on the Schneck and Chan sides of the family.
Elisabeth was predeceased by her Grandmothers, and her very special Aunt Wee Goon.
Lissy will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
Elisabeth’s funeral will take place on December 19th 2022, in the Celebration Hall, at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver 5455 Fraser Street, viewing from 10:00 AM for close family, 11:00 AM for all others, a ceremony at 12:00 and a brief reception, and will end with Elisabeth’s interment at 2:30 PM.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Academy Symphony Orchestra, and Foundry Granville-Vancouver.
