Obituary
Edith Thornton (nee Strahl/Drew) passed away July 7, 2022, at Fairmount Home Glenburnie. Beloved wife and best friend of Donald Thornton for 51 years. Loving and proud mother of Nancy Kent (Ron) of Middle Sackville, NS, and Catherine MacNeil (Ernie) of Bath, ON. Proud grandparent of Katherine Kent, and Ryan and Erin MacNeil. Music played a central part in Edith’s life beginning in her home church, Minnedosa United Church, MB, and as a piano teacher before moving to Ontario in 1956 to teach English, Music, and Latin at Sydenham High School. Edith was a member and soloist of Sydenham Street United Church Choir for nearly 50 years, a long-time member of the Kingston Choral Society, a seniors’ choir, and the Frontenac Ladies choir. For over thirty years Edith was a dedicated member of the organizing committee for the Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival.
Edith’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Fairmount Home for their years of wonderful care. The family will receive friends at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, on Saturday, July 16, 2022, from 10-11 a.m. immediately followed by a service in the Chapel 11-12 p.m. with a reception to follow. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place later in Minnedosa, MB with assistance from White’s Funeral Home, Minnedosa, Manitoba. Memorial donations may be made to the Kingston Kiwanis Music Festival, Alzheimer Society, or charity of choice.
THORNTON, Donald Roy passed away in the company of family on 3 August 2020 at Kingston General Hospital. Beloved husband and best friend of Edith (Strahl/Drew). Loving and proud father of Nancy Kent (Ron) of Middle Sackville, NS, and Catherine MacNeil (Ernie) of Bath, ON, proud grandparent of Katherine Kent, and Ryan and Erin MacNeil. Retired teacher of Technological Studies, Collins Bay/Frontenac Secondary School. A family memorial service will be conducted at JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, 15 August 2020 at 1400. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the service must be constrained to immediate family only. The service will be live streamed on the internet – log on details will be posted on the James Reid Funeral Home website the day of service. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Internment will take place at a later date in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice or to the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation of Canada.
