It is with much sadness and love that we say goodbye to David Duncan; husband, father, Opa, and friend who passed peacefully after a 2.5-year battle with cancer.
Dave was predeceased by his parents David and Phyllis Duncan. He is survived by his wife Irene; daughters Laura (Corey), Rachel (Patrick), and Ellen (Niel); grandchildren Kylie, Brooke, Ashton, Jayden, and Duncan; and Sister Janet (Norm).
Dave was born and raised in Sudbury where he participated in hockey and enjoyed time at his family’s cottage fishing and hunting which he visited throughout his life. Dave completed a Mining Engineering degree in 1975 from Queens University and an MBA in 1980 at the University of Western Ontario. He moved to Calgary where he met Irene and they married in 1981.
Work transfers took Dave and Irene to Edmonton, Port Moody, Calgary and then back to Edmonton where they raised their family. Dave was a strong proponent and supporter of education and career growth for each of his daughters. He encouraged taking opportunities and cheered on their successes. This transferred into all things in their life with sports and hobbies.
Dave was a member of First Mennonite Church and volunteered in many committees including the new building in late 1990’s.
Dave was a strong supporter of blood donations making over 530 whole blood, plasma, and platelet donations. Post retirement he was proud to work and volunteer at Canadian Blood Services and arranging for volunteers at mobile donation clinics up until his death.
Dave enjoyed being outdoors, hunting for ducks in the early mornings and fishing with his family. He treasured the trips where he could go snorkeling in Hawaii and would spend hours exploring different bays.
Dave was Opa to his grandchildren and loved seeing them smile and laugh and spending time with them.
The memorial will be held at First Mennonite Church, 3650-91 Street NW in Edmonton on July 6th at 11:00 am MST with reception to follow. This will be scent-free location due to sensitive allergies. A live zoom link will be provided below.
