With broken hearts we say goodbye to Dr. Beaton J. Walsh, (PhD, PsyD), who passed away suddenly on February 24, 2022 at Health Science Centre, St. John’s, NL, at the age of 62.
Beaton will be remembered and live on forever in the hearts of his loved ones including his wife of 36 years Debbie; his daughters Chloe (Nick) and Cailey (Andrew); his brothers Frank (Gladys), Bart (Beth), Wayne (Linda), Luke Jr. and Brian; his sisters Geraldine, Theresa (Pat), Marilyn and Mary, sister in law Adele; parents in law Arch and Lillian Dober, brothers in law Rick, Glen (Nikki), and Johnny (Christina); sisters in law Trish (Brendan) and Lisa as well as his many nieces and nephews.
Growing up, Beaton was actively involved in sports like soccer and hockey. He spoke often about his memories living in university residence, Bowater, a legacy he passed down to his girls. Beaton loved tradition. He loved history. He loved learning. Beaton loved life and seized every single second of it, in a way that we can all learn from.
Beaton will be remembered for his steadfast commitment and many contributions to the fields of psychology and education. He dedicated his life to the service of others, often acting as a mentor or advocate for those who did not have a voice. Beaton made friends with virtually everyone he met and his family often joked that they couldn’t go out in public without being stopped once or twice with people saying hi to him.
Beaton loved and valued his family more than anything else in the world. His close bond with his parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, served the basis of many fun nights in the shed playing darts and drinking Guinness.
His wife, Debbie, was his best friend and together they created a beautiful family with their daughters Chloe and Cailey. As a family they loved spending time together. Whether it was travelling, watching British detective shows, or listening to their favorite music, Beaton was happiest when “the band” was back together.
Beaton did a lot of things well, but the role he was most proud of was “dad”. Beaton committed his life to making sure his girls were loved, protected and cared for every single day. He could always be found with a camera or video recorder in hand, making sure to document all the moments, big and small. He would stop at nothing to make his girls’ dreams come true, and he did just that. This love often extended to Chloe and Cailey’s friends. He will be remembered fondly as a “second dad” to many, serving as the resident confidante, advice giver and soccer coach.
Beaton had a way of bringing light and laughter to the toughest of situations. He would go to great lengths to make those in his life smile. His library of “Beaton-jokes” and Movie/TV references seemed to never end. In that spirit, Beaton will live on forever in the stories, jokes and laughter of his loved ones. He always said, grief is the price we pay for loving. Beaton loved unconditionally and was loved immensely in return, and our grief will reflect that.
We are comforted with the fact that he is reunited with predeceased parents, Luke and Mary; brothers, Arch and Gerard; sister, Bernadette; brothers-in-law, Alphonsus Drake & Bernard Hodder; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Walsh & Jeanette Walsh, niece Lori, and nephews Arch Jr. and Barry, and best buddy Barney.
