Obituary
Dr. D. Lorne MacLellan
We regret to announce the passing of Dr. David Lorne MacLellan of Sydney, formerly of Sydney Mines, on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at the Northside General Hospital.
Lorne was born in Sydney Mines on November 20, 1931, to the late John and Alice (Cox) MacLellan. A graduate of Sydney Mines High School, Acadia University, and Dalhousie University, he was a well-known educator whose tenure of 35 years in the local school system took him from a classroom teacher to principal of Sydney Mines High School to Superintendent of the Northside-Victoria Amalgamated School Board. After his retirement, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of a Ph.D. in Education from Dalhousie University and served a further 10 years as an Assistant Professor of Education at St. F. X. University. Throughout his career, his passion, skills, energy, and enthusiasm were his well-known trademarks. His skills in teaching math and English literature were highly regarded.
An active member of the community, Lorne volunteered his time and talents to many Cape Breton organizations. These included Kinsmen, Royal Oak Lodge #85, Shriners, Cape Breton District Health Authority, Cape Breton Masonic Choir, Cape Breton Chordsmen, and the Keltic Chorus. Until recently, he was an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church serving particularly as an Elder and choir member, as well as the Presbyterian Church in Canada Assembly Council.
But above all else, Lorne was a devoted and loving husband and father. He married the love of his life, Irene (Reid) in 1960 and they were together for 59 years until Irene’s passing in 2019 after which he missed her dearly. Lorne is survived by his son, Clyde (Marian McMahon), Ottawa, and daughter, Nancy (Rev. Ritchie Robinson), North Sydney. He is also survived by sisters- and brothers-in-law Evelyn Carver (Sydney), Velma (Richard) Wace (Toronto), Margie Reid (Sydney), Lloyd (Francie) Reid (Sydney), Helen Reid (Sydney), Marge MacLellan (Dartmouth) and many nieces and nephews.
Lorne was the last surviving member of his family, having been predeceased by his parents, his sister Adrienne and his brothers Clyde, Douglas, Gordon, and Earle, as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law from the MacLellan and Reid families.
Special thanks to Drs. Beth MacCormick, Dawn Browne, and Phil Curry for their care over the years, Parkland Cape Breton for their kindness, and Dr. Andrew Wawer and the nurses and staff of 5-East and 4-West of the Northside General for the excellent care and comfort.
Visitation for Lorne will be held in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, from 6 – 8 p.m. A celebration of life will take place Thursday, January 5, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, St. Giles Presbyterian Church, North Sydney, or a charity of choice. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
