Cheryl passed away at home with family at her bedside. She is now present with God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. Cheryl is from a strong family of faith. Her father was the late Gerald Ernest Johnson from Beachburg. Her mother also from Beachburg is Dale Aileen nee McClelland (Johnson) Rae.
Cheryl has four siblings Phil (Lynda), Paul (Joyce), Deborah (Ted) Deuck and Brent (Robin). With her life partner and best friend Fred, they raised four strong caring and compassionate children. Brenda (Peter) Little, Candace Robbins, John (Jacquline) and Mark (Nicole).
Cheryl attended Stouffville District Secondary School and then transferred to Huron Heights in
Newmarket for the nursing program where she meet lifetime friend Carolynne (Robbins) Phillips now her sister in law and Fred’s sister. The two girls attended Briercrest Bible School in Caronport, Saskatchewan together each leaving a close boyfriend behind.
Cheryl’s professional career continued with her working at Buckingham Manor, Parkview
Nursing Home and finally at Markham Stouffville Hospital in palliative care for many years. While raising four children she upgraded by studying for her RN degree and continued to a Bachelor of Nursing Science. She was ill and fell one credit short because she could not do the placement.
To her credit her children have become service minded, Brenda a RN in ICU at Markham
Stouffville Hospital; Candace as an engineer now teaching physics at Rockway Mennonite Collegiate in Kitchener; John as an Acting Captain with Richmond Hill Fire Department is a fire fighter; Mark in the pool business as Service Technician.
Cheryl’s life was made up of many adventures and special trips. She always enjoyed the
outdoors in National and Provincial Parks in Ontario, with her very young children. Even last year was proud to see this special family experience now enjoyed by all her grandchildren.
She took a trip to England to support and share with her girls who performed Gilbert and
Sullivan on stage at the Buxton Opera House. Then enjoy some family excursions to Scotland and other family connections in Sterling and beyond. Cheryl and Mark enjoyed special holidays with two trips. They took one trip to the east coast and Cabot Trail, the other traveling across Canada to the west coast.
Cheryl and Fred saw their oldest son John married in Woodville, Nova Scotia and then took another east coast drive about.
Cheryl has lived with ovarian cancer which started 25 years ago. In the last few years, the
resurgence of the same cancer had metastasized to the liver and lungs. She courageously asked God for time trying clinical studies which extended her life to see wonderful grandchildren, Kevin (22), Parker (19), Easton (4), Georgia (3) and Forrest (2).
In the last weeks she was happy to hear the news of another “girl” coming soon.
Cheryl will be remembered for her trust in God and her strong faith which she shared by word and action. Her character was marked by service and determination while quietly being that strong example to those who surrounded her.
