In Celebration of
Beryl Leone Fratton (nee Nunn)
September 29, 1938 –
October 15, 2022
Beryl Leone Fratton (née Nunn), aged eighty-four, and lovingly known as “Oma”, passed away peacefully on October 15th, 2022, surrounded by her family, in Mississauga, Ontario.
Born September 29th, 1938, in Wallsend on Tyne, near Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, to Edith Nunn (née Wear) and Victor Harold Nunn.
Beryl is survived by her loving Husband of 57 years, Adolf Fratton; her children Helen (m. Allan) Fratton-MacDonald and Christopher (m. Glenda) Fratton; and her grandchildren Miranda, Austin, and Maëlle.
Beryl’s childhood was spent living in Newcastle Upon Tyne, including during World War II. She often spoke of the presence of bomb craters on her street, the sound of V1 flying bombs buzzing over, and her Father Victor, in uniform. She spent much of her childhood learning about nature while collecting empty birds’ eggs and flowers with her father. As an adult, Beryl followed in the footsteps
of her Aunt, Mabel Wear – a WWI Nurse, and enrolled in Nursing School in Newcastle and London, England; where she completed her training as a Registered Nurse.
Beryl emigrated to Canada via the Cunard ocean liner, R.M.S. Carinthia, in 1963 and settled in Toronto, where she continued Nursingat Toronto General Hospital. Beryl met Adolf in Toronto, and they were married in 1965. They moved from Toronto to Mississauga in 1969 with their two children, and Beryl continued her nursing career at the Mississauga Hospital. Beryl and Adolf travelled extensively throughout Europe, and lived in many different locations, including: Toronto, Mississauga, Gravenhurst and Thunder Bay, Ontario; Edmonton, Alberta; Saint John, New Brunswick; and the island of Grenada, in the Southern Caribbean.
After an early retirement, and throughout these many changes of location, Beryl kept very busy volunteering at the Mississauga Hospital, Bethune House, and Communities in Bloom in Gravenhurst, and many other societies and community groups. Beryl also became very active in various choral groups, light opera societies, and performance groups. Some of these include: St. Anne’s Music and Drama Society, the Toronto Opera Repertoire, and the Etobicoke Musical Productions. She also appeared onstage as an extra, in several Canadian Opera Company productions. Beryl will always be remembered for her dry, English sense of humour, her “BBC
London” accent, and her myriad of interests and hobbies.
Beryl was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her love of pets, photography, classical music, opera, history, and literature will live on with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
There will be a small service for immediate family members only. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
