Ambrose (Junior) Howse of Mount Pearl, NL, formerly of Wesleyville, NL, aged 84 years. Ambrose graced us with his presence on September 28, 1937. He was born into the thriving fishing community of Wesleyville, on the rugged northeast coast of Newfoundland, the sixth of what would eventually become seven brothers. He grew up exposed and immersed in the fishing and sealing culture of the area. However, while many of his contemporaries looked to the sea to find their economic way in the world, Ambrose found inspiration in the immediate physical landscape around him. No doubt, curious about the rugged rocky shorelines, and the mysterious boulders that seemed to rise up from the marshland that surrounded his home, he embarked on the road less taken in those days, and ventured off to Memorial University in the mid 1950s where he studied arts and science with a focus on geology. Following graduation in 1960, he worked in the mining sector for a number of years at a number of different locations. It was also during this time he met Blanche Kean, fell in love, and got married in a famous blizzard in Wesleyville in December 1965.
Ambrose returned to Memorial University, completed an education degree, and began teaching following his marriage. After starting a family, he went to wherever the work opportunities presented themselves. Some of the places he called home during this time period included Wesleyville, Baie Verte, Northern Ontario, Corner Brook, Botwood, Marystown and Gander. He eventually settled in Mount Pearl in the mid 1970s after he secured a position as a geologist at the Department of Mines & Energy in St. John’s. It was during this period that he rode the ebb and flow of life doing geological field work in the Newfoundland bush during the summer, while drafting reports in the winter. Family life focused on raising his children, whether it was taking them, or himself, to hockey, soccer or swimming or helping them with their homework. Following his retirement in the early 2000s, he was able to focus on his social life, where he would often find himself “partying” with the other ex-pats of Bonavista Bay North. The final eleven years of his life found him taking joy by actively engaging in the lives of his two grandchildren, Leah & Lauren. Whether he offered himself up to have his hair and makeup done by Lauren, or being taught grade two over and over again by Leah, his final years were filled with the joy of just being Poppy Ambrose to his two granddaughters.
Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Ave, Mount Pearl on Tuesday, August 16 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A memorial service will take place at Barrett’s Mount Pearl Chapel on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at The Columbarium at The Anglican Cemetery Kenmount Road. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Ambrose’s name to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the SPCA.
